Truck Tires
Hi! We need tires for our 2013 Ford F350 Super Duty. We pull a 2012 Keystone Montana 3700RL Fifth Wheel (15K pounds). While I want the best tire for the job and for them to have long life, my wife would be happy if it also rides nicely.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
David

How about the really nice Michelins that came on it.....anything wrong with them? Now that I think about it, yours may have come with the Goodyear. Anyway, the originals not give you good service?

The tire size is LT275/65R20 on a 4x4. We did not purchase the truck new and it currently has Nitto Terra Grapplers. Thanks again!!

Is that the size posted on the door post or the current size..
A buddy of mine just bought a F350 4 X 4 and it has 20's on it as well.. but much larger than OEM... which were 17"

The size on the truck is what's on the door info. But oddly enough, when getting out the spare today it is a LT275 70R18!!

What do you do with your truck? All/mainly highway? If so I would pick a "milder" tread than the Terra Grapplers. I had a set and they made quite a bit of noise. There are some regular AT tires that aren't as aggressive, give good service and ride comfortably. You will probably have to weigh in the pricing as well since you start talking a bit of money when tires get that big and bigger. My truck has Firestone TransForce tires and I've been really happy with them after swearing off Firestone years ago. After looking I didn't see your size though.
As far as the size of the spare; you need to look at the tires on the ground. I believe when you go to a 20" wheel/tire option the spare remains whatever the original size was for the truck.....

Our 2012 Chevy 2500HD D/A 4WD CC stock came with LT265/70R18 tires, but the dealer had put after market 20's on it. When we took it for a test drive, the rough ride was the first thing both my wife and I noticed. Just figured it was the nature of the beast. While we were in the process of the paperwork, the salesman disclosed the wheels and tires were not stock. I asked what was stock, and I told him he would have to put the stock tires and wheels on it, or there would be no deal. It was amazing how much better the ride was with the 18" tires. Also, in the manual, Chevy advises that the 20" tires should not be used off road, due to the short sidewall.

My personal preference would be the MICHELIN LTX A/T 2...

Ford uses the 18" wheel as a spare on all their SuperDuty trucks equipped with 20" wheels. The larger side profile aspect ratio (70 or 75 vs 60 or 65) allows for a very similar circumference and tire/wheel height. You'll find that same practice on most of Ford's vehicles that have "oversized" wheels as a factory option. As an example, our 2008 Escape has 17" optional wheels and came with a 16" "slim spare tire".
As for replacement tires, I can't speak for any other brands on SuperDuty trucks in recent years, but I've been very satisfied with the Michelin LTX tires that were on my 2013. The same tires are on my 2015 and again, they have provided very good service. It's my intention, when I need to replace them, I'll put the Michelin's on the truck, probably the same type unless Michelin comes up with an improved version.

I'll second that. also the LTX Defender M/S. Those tires are awesome. Worth every penny.

Our F-350 came with MICHELIN LTX A/T 2 and were replaced at 73,000 with about 25,000 of those miles towing the 5th wheel. We could have gotten an easy 6-8000 further except one tire had an odd wear pattern. Yes, we do have the chrome/aluminum 20" wheels. When we broke the front right wheel the 18" spare measured almost exactly the same diameter as mentioned earlier. Keep us posted.

Yes, it is common for the spare to be a different size because they use the steel wheel, but the actual diameter of the tire is about the same.
I used to use Michelin LTX M/S2s exclusively and loved them. With the last set I switched to Cooper Discoverer AT tires at a significant cost saving over the Michelin and I love them. The ride and noise is actually much better. The part I was worried about was balancing, they actually balanced better and used less weight than the Michelins. As someone who used to work at a tire shop, that says a lot to me. Higher quality tires always take less weight than a cheaper tire. If you ever mount a tire and they start putting on 4 oz or more, take them off. Sometimes it can be fixed by spinning the tire on the rim a bit, but sometimes they just need a different tire. If you have multiple tires have the same problem on one rim, it's probably time to replace that rim.
