Heat Strip

Has anyone added a heat strip? I believe you need the strip and new thermostat for the Dometic install.

Right now I use a 1500w heater in the link below. I usually put it into eco mode (800w) and it does well. I just don't like running it at night, so I go to propane heat. The temps don't get extremely cold, but propane can go fast. I would rather use the site electricity if possible.

I've had two previous campers with the A/C heat strips factory installed. They do require a different thermostat, and in my opinion, save your money. Neither one was worth a darn under 60 deg +/- except to take the morning chill off.

We do great with a simple heater/fan combo that's rated at 1500 watts... I guess these things are just less effective?

That's what I've been using. I just don't like leaving it on at night.

Why? We run at least one portable heater every night during cold snaps and two portable heaters when it gets really cold. We only use the propane heater in extreme cold or during AC power outages.

The concern of fire from the heater or electrical wiring. It pulls a lot on the electrical wiring. I live in Texas, so I don't need heat often. I'll just stick with my current setup.

Small 1500 Watt heater use

On our recent trip, with temps down in the thirties( Florida - damn), we used a small 1500W heater, usually set on low, and it kept our 30' fiver warm, with the furnace only running a few times a night.

It never tripped a breaker, and this is in our fiver which trips a breaker if we have our coffee maker on with about anything else. Generally all breakers in a RV are 15 amp circuits, wired with 14 gauge wire, and that is safe for a 1500 watt heater, which uses approximately 12.5 amps.

Definitely wouldn't run two heaters in the RV, even though you could on separate circuits, but as ours showed, one did a fine job of keeping us warm all night long.

When I turn the coffee pot on in the morning, I make sure the heater is on eco mode. The eco mode is about 800w (according to my kill-a-watt meter).

Elect. Fireplace

My wife and I had to driveway camp for 3 weeks just before Christmas. Doing a re-mod of the hardwoods and kitchen etc. So we lived out there while the floors cured out. I thought I would be running back and forth getting propane because my wife likes the gas heat as opposed to electric. We ran the fireplace heater and a electric unit in the bedroom. If we were up and it wasn't comfy enough I had another elect heater I put in the living room/kitchen. Only a few times did she have to turn the propane unit on.

The weather got pretty cold during that time just south of KCMO.

Going to run a separate 110v line to an outside plug this spring for the additional heater. We did trip the breaker if I cranked up the coffee maker or other appliance.
