Larger Size?

I have a 2010 Laredo 316RL. It has 235/80/16's. Can I go to a 235/85/16 with out a problem? The 85's are approx. 1" larger in diameter.

What's your clearance (loaded) to the RV deck (on top of the tire)? What's your clearance between the tires?

These are the questions that you need to answer. Yes they are about 1" taller, but that's only 1/2" additional on top, but will be the full 1" closer between tires since you gain the 1/2" on each. Your suspension typically will travel about 2", but could go as much as 3". Most trailers have 6" or more clearance. I made this exact change on my Alpine without any problems. Went from the E rated Tow Max to the F rated Carlisle tires and very glad I did it. Check your clearances and go from there.

Good questions! Current measurements without water is approx. 5" to bottom of the deck and 2 3/4" between tires. I will need to load the water tank and take some additional measurements! BTW bsmith0404, I was also looking at Carlisle 235/85/16(1.1" diameter increase, .3 width increase.) 120lb per tire capacity over current 80 series. How many miles have you got on your Carlisle's? I have read many poor reports on them but recently spoke to a traveler that just put 12k plus to Alaska and back with no issues. So go figure.

Figured that's what you were looking at. I've only got about 2k on this set, but had Carlisles (same tire different size) on my last 5er as well and had over 6k on those before I traded it in. Also run the same tire on my car hauler, about 8k on that without issues. I have had good luck with them, and will never hesitate to put them on any of my trailers....obviously. I think your measurements are pretty good, I doubt you'll get much difference when you load it with water, but it's always good to check first vs find out the hard way later.

I run 235/85/16 LTs on mine and have about 2" to 3" clearance between tires. The extra 1/2" height means more clearance with bedrails when towing. I have had no problems.

I have read this discussion many times, saying one size is an inch larger than the other, but when I research the tires, at least with the tires made by Goodyear, they are the same diameter, 30.7 inches.

There are several tire size comparison calculators available on the web, the one I use shows the 85 is .9" taller than the 80. It's basically impossible for them to be the same size based on how tires are sized. The 235 is the width of the tread in mm, so both are the same, the 80 and 85 is the height of the sidewall based on a percentage of the width, so the sidewall on the 80 is 80% of the width, the 85 is 85% of the width. Obviously 85% is more than 80%. Since a 235 is 9.25", 80% is 7.4", 85% is 7.86" so .46" taller sidewall times 2 sidewalls (top and bottom) gives a .92" taller tire.

Thanks for doing the math. I was going off the Carlisle page showing the different specs. Comparing the 235/85/16 to the 235/80/16. But you can't always believe what you read. http://www.carlisletransportationpro...adial-trail-rh
