New tires, 205/75/D15

Getting ready to pull the trigger on new tires for the TT. In stock form, the 205/75/D15 are a C rated tire and I'd like to go up to a D tire. I've read so much about trailer tires, I think I'm going numb. I want to stick with ST tires. GY Marathon has a D rated tire, but it's a 225/75/R15. Is that my best option?

Thanks!

Also, what does the D mean before the 15?

Many people are "brand loyal" and prefer Goodyear. The last I checked, Marathon (by Goodyear) are made in China. That puts them (IMHO) right there with LoadStar, Load Flight and the other "may pops"... I've had great service from Maxxis and there are a number of glowing reports on this forum from other Maxxis owners.

If I were you, I'd seriously consider the Maxxis M8008 as a "first contender".

Thanks John. I am on the discount site and reading about their tires. The m8008 is an E rated tire in the 225/75 @ $135/ea. The Carlisle radial trail has an E rated 225/75 tire @ 102/ea. Any thoughts on them?

I did read the GY's were made in China, kinda makes me not want to get them.

I don't know enough about Carlisle to make any comments. I will say that usually, once I find a good product that works for me, I don't go looking for something better unless I have a need to look. So far, it's been Maxxis and I've had no problems that would cause me to look any further. I'm satisfied, so I haven't looked at Carlisle.

Well, he's my dilemma:

205/75/R15 M8008 in load D for $110/ea

OR

225/75/R15 Carlisle Radial Sport load E for $102/ea

It's a bias tire vice the more common radial.

CW

On edit: Maxxis has just discontinued production on their 8009 bias tire line.

At a difference of $8 per tire ($32 total) I don't see that as a "dilemma". Like JRTJH, I have Maxxis and would not hesitate - even for $32 to go for something different. Maxxis are, IMO, a proven reliable and road-worthy tire. Hard to go wrong.

I found a site with really great prices, realdealtires.com Anyone heard of them? I saw someone on here bought a set a few months back from them.

I have the sig pic directly linked from a site that had that pic, but it was much smaller when I originally linked it. I don't post on here that much and I hadn't noticed how big it became. I'll change it to something a little more reasonable.

I had the Carlisle Radial Trail RH on my last trailer, they were a great tire and I would not hesitate to buy them again. I have no experience with the Sport Trail tire.

realdealtires doesn't have the carlisle radial trail tires in stock. Going through that site, it'd be $400.24 for 4 M8008 225/75/R15 8 ply 113Q tires. That's more than $100 cheaper than anywhere else.

Jimmy,

Just make sure you're getting RADIAL tires 225 75R15 LRD not D225 75 15 (bias ply)

Which explains the price.

Here is the Maxxis website link to their published data/specs:
http://shop.maxxis.com/c/m8008-st-ra...irected_post=1

Item number: TL15703000
Size: 205/75R15
Plys: 8 LR D)
Style: BSW
Diameter: 27.1
Section width: 8.1
Max PSI: 65
Max Load: 2150
Rim Width: 5.5
Tread Depth: 9/32

The "factory store" price is $163.04 each, so the price you're being quoted is a VERY GOOD price.... I'd suggest you make absolutely certain that the items you're buying are, in fact, radial tires. Bias Ply Maxxis are significantly cheaper than radials and the price of the tires you've selected is in line with Bias Ply pricing, not radial pricing. You may be getting an extremely good deal, or that company may be substituting BP tires and reflecting the lower cost.

Just double-check that you're getting what you think you're getting. Sending them back will cost more than just keeping them, once they are in your hands.....

ADDED: I just went to the realdealtires.com website and according to their information, you're correct, the radial 205 75R 15 LRD tires are $79.24 each. So, if the information they post is correct, they may just have the best price on the internet ??? Depending on service and shipping charges, it looks like a great deal on Maxxix tires.

Maxxis ST205/75R15 D M8008 ST RADIAL

Tire Specifications
Load Rating 107 2149 lbs (975 kg) per tire
Speed Rating Q 100 mph (160 kph)
Sidewall BSW
Ply Rating 8
Load Capacity 2150 pounds (lbs)
Maximum Inflation 65 PSI
That is the correct tire. Maxxis no longer manufacturers the M8009 bias trailer tires.

There is no added incentive to spend the extra money for load range D tires unless you can air them to 65 psi. So make sure your rims are rated for the increased air pressure requirements of the LRD tires.

Tires arrived and I couldn't be happier. Got them mounted and balanced at Belle Tire for free including new valve stems. I am amazed the difference in tire construction from the tires I had to the new M8008's. I won't be worrying nearly as much about tires with these new shoes. While the wheels were off, I painted the wheels and brake drums as well as checked the bearings and brakes. Everything seemed to be in order for our trip next Friday.

I highly recommend realdealtires.com.

Jimmy13,
The RealDeal website describes the tire as a Q, 100 mph tire. Is the Q rating molded on the tires? I can't find anywhere else (including Maxxis' website) that says the tire is a Q rated tire.

Terry...I don't see any markings on the tire that would indicate a Q rated tire. Even if it were, would that be a terrible thing? I mean, I'm not going over 65 with this TT.

A "Q", 100 mph rating would be a good thing, just never saw a rating that high on a ST trailer tire.

Just be sure if you move up to the 225 tire with a load range C (or D) from the 205 load range C you have sufficient clearance. They are taller by 1 1/2" If you do stay with 205 because of clearance issues I had difficulty finding a load range D , and had to fore-go GY but found a suitable set.
