80 psi rims?

Does anyone know if the standard rims (white metal) on my Springdale 279 5th wheel are approved for 80 PSI? I am considering going from D (standard) to E load range tires. Thanx in advance.

There should be a Maximum Load and/or a Maximum PSI stamped either on the back side of the rim or under the tire on the inside of the bead. If you can find one or the other, you can look up the specs for the wheel on the internet.

Generally speaking,

14" 5 lug wheels are rated Max. Cap: 1,760 lbs. each Max PSI: 50 lbs.

15" 5 lug wheels are rated Max. Cap: 1,820 lbs. each Max PSI: 50 lbs.

15" 6 lug wheels are rated Max. Cap: 2,540 lbs. each Max PSI: 65 lbs

There are some wheels rated at higher capacity and PSI, but the only way to know for sure is to find that stamp and go from there.

That is the rating for the wheel, the tire mounted on them will also have a rating and the two must be used at the lowest rating.

I now have 80psi rated, Load Range E Maxxis tires on our Cougar. We have the standard 15" white metal wheels - 6 bolt pattern (6 on 5.5) with a max load capacity stamped rating of 2850 lb.

Before purchasing the tires, I checked with Discount and Schwaab in the US, 2 local tires stores and the web. All of my sources stated that those rims would be suitable for 80 psi tires.

The manufacturer of the rim is the only real authority for it's particular specifications. The DOT requires tire manufacturers to identify rims by size and pass that information on to their consumers, certifying individual rim sizes for individual tires.

Rim specifications for weight and air pressures are the responsibility of rim manufacturers and are certified by the SAE. The DOT does not require those values to be put on every rim. Some manufacturers do, most do not.

Automotive rims are seldom upgraded for more load capacity which requires more air pressure.

The DOT does require rim manufacturers to identify themselves as the rim builder by insuring that information is on each and every rim. Using that information and the rim part and model number will get you the rim's specs form the builder.

Here is a reference to get into the ballpark. Here the rim load capacity will sustain whetever pressure is require to get to its maximum load capacity.
