Cougar 26 SAB Back bumper falling off

Another day of fun filled excitement with the trailer. I have it over at my all time favorite mechanic who was doing all the maintenance and install my new Maxxis tires. So far we have found I need to replace all of the 14 bushings, all of the shackles (worn and out of round) all the shackle bolts One of the hangers was bent but he managed to fix it. The bumper (and he showed me) the weld was cracked and it was about to fall off. I know there is a recall on these bumpers but I'm a little concerned if I take it back to the dealer that they will try to weld it up. Bumper is only 3/16 and he told me that it is too thin. He said it was only welded on the sides and top with nothing on the bottom. I think I will cut my losses and buy a thicker piece of tube steel and have it welded on Trailer is a 2011 this is our third season and I have it inspected and maintained every year. I must be on some pretty rough roads or the trailer is built too light. I'm guessing its too light. Oh I forgot to mention the wiring at the back bumper that is starting to rub through as well. Lots of work and money. Who wants to retire anyway.....

You shouldn't be surprised at discovering worn bushings, shackles and shackle bolts. Ours needed replacing after 2 years - same problems that you found. The nylon bushings were paper thin to start with and many had worn right through in spots and out of round shackles.

I had everything replaced with brass bushings, wet bolts and thicker, sturdier shackles. Not sure but I think Keystone upgraded the suspension and now has installed something which is of superior quality.

I think you're smart to get a thicker bumper installed and have it secured (welded or bolted) to the frame if you can. That way, if you decide to install a bike rack then you will be good to go. Your "guess" that it is too light is spot on.

Hang in there, retirement will come- eventually.
