Spare TV Tire
On another thread I talked about how I was buying new tires for my TV and now I have discovered that my 10 year old full size spare is in just as bad a shape...
Dry rotted....
My question to the forum is, are they any other options to replacing the spare with a $200.00 tire I may never use? I thought about buying the cheapest load E tire I can find.. just to have that peace of mind... it really is the only option I can think of... Or find a used one on craigslist...
The tires coming off the truck are too old and cracked to last much longer and to make one of them a new spare does not make much sense...

I'd buy a reputable but less expensive tire in the same size and load rating. How much is your safety worth when you're driving with a camper and your spare tire?

I agree, I did think of something else, I think I might find a OEM rim that matches my truck, buy a 5th tire, and rotate the spare in and out. At least this way I am getting to use a $200 tire....

Last time I swapped tires I bought a used tire for $10 for the spare from a used tire guy. My GM dealer would pile their trade in tires out back and let him take them so they didn't have to pay to get rid of them. They found me one in good condition. Just a thought.

I found a junk yard with a used OEM rim for 100 bucks... So I am going to buy another tire and have it mounted and do the 5 tire rotation with the spare... This way i know what I have in the spare department... Especially if I am towing and got a flat...

Why not buy the same tire that you are using on the truck and use it for a spare? I think a component of good tire care and maintenance involves occasional rotation of the your tires as well as the other usual things like checking air pressure, etc.
If you buy the same tire and use it in routine rotation, you will get to use it and make good use of your money as well as resulting in tires that will last longer.

Buying a wheel to match the ones on the ground is sometimes not an option. On some spare tire racks, the cast wheels are too wide to fit under the truck. Before spending a lot of money for something that may not work, I'd do some measuring and possibly do a "trial fit" before buying something that's not returnable.

John,
I guess I don't understand....? If the current full size spare and steel rim fit under the truck, why wouldn't a OEM rim mounted with a same size full tire not fit..?

When I rotate my tires, my spare is included in the rotation sequence.

Canesfan has an excellent solution to the TV spare issue. I have my dealer, where I've been doing business for 25+ years, keep an eye out for good tires in my size and load range. I personally check them out before installing on the spare rim. Tread depth is not an issue as long as the wear bars are still visible. I'm more interested in the age and overall condition. I use 4 years as max age and change then out every couple of years while in for a rotation. Usually only costs $20-25 including mounting and balance. Obviously, I would only do this for a spare that will probably never hit the road. Last time I changed a flat on the side of the road was January, 1977. One of the coldest mornings ever in Durham, NC. Brrrrr!
