LP Alarm Constantly Sounds

Good morning all,

I wanted to reach out and see if anyone can assist with my LP alarm constantly sounding, not just the chirp, but a full alarm.

I have a 2021 Keystone Hideout 272bh, it’s hooked up to 30amp shore power and has been since we bought it. Our alarm started sounding 2 months after purchase. We’ve completely un-hooked the propane and let the camper air out.

Alarm still kept sounding at random. We thought it was from cooking spray so we stopped using that, my wife doesn’t use any hair spray or any other aerosol in the camper. We talked to Camping World and they said the alarms are very sensitive.

Here lately, the alarm has been going off at night when only the AC is running. No propane is hooked up. As soon as I get up to look, it goes off….. throughout the day it will randomly sound, no propane is hooked up.

Model # is RVCOLP-2. Any help would or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike

Even though it hasn’t reached its shelf life there have been several of these detectors this year having issues as reported by others..

Go buy a new one and install

I appreciate the feedback, I’ll grab one this weekend and hopefully that helps. It’s more of a nuisance than a safety feature at this point.

Cheers,
Mike

I found this from the advertiser's web site talking about the "features" of this detector.

"Alarm activates with a four beep pattern with a flashing red LED for CO gas, or a continuous beeping with a solid red LED for Propane gas. If both gases are present, the alarm will indicate Propane as it requires more immediate action."

Also:

CO Sensitivity
60-120 minutes at 70ppm
10-30 minutes at 150ppm
4-15 minutes at 400ppm

LP Sensitivity
4200 ppm (<20% LEL)

Which alarm are you hearing? The 4 beeps, or the continuous.

Although the web site says this specific model should not be as sensitive to other "chemicals" as in the past, unfortunately, they are.

It's possible your camper could be "out gassing" (breathing away that "new car smell"... only it's the "new camper smell.") and this is causing the alarm to go off.

Just curious? When it begins beeping, what do you do to stop it from beeping?

The smoke alarm in our camper is very sensitive. Pretty much anything cooked on the stove will set it off. We open doors and windows when cooking. I finally pulled the batteries and got new smoke detectors and put them up in different areas of the camper, away from the kitchen area. That dang thing was driving us nuts. So I do understand your aggravation over this.

We are hearing the 4 beeps. When it sounds, at first we were opening the doors and venting the the camper. It happens so frequently now that we just get annoyed by it. We’ve noticed that it happens at night when we are asleep more than it does throughout the day.

Do you have a pet that sleeps close to it? Years ago we had a dog that loved to sleep with his "exhaust" right in front of the LP detector. It would go off in the middle of the night, scare him and he would move so I didn't realize the correlation. One night I was up late and "witnessed " his gas attack so the mystery was solved.

Mine used to go off when the Black tank would get close to full. I couldn't figure out if it was my imagination. To check it, I purchased another alarm at Walmart and it didn't go off when my original alarm did.

Sounds like mine did. When this RV was about a year old it began doing what yours is doing and drove us crazy so I just disconnected it (we were traveling). Finally found an RV store with one like it in black and installed it. It has not chirped or given an issue since.

That detector is wired directly to your rv battery, if the batteries are low it will sound the detector. Before spend the $$ on a detector have your batteries load tested & be sure if your rv is so equipped that the battery disconnect is in the "on/connected position so its getting charged while connected to shore power.
Typically rv dealers install the cheapest marine cranking batteries on the market which are not the best option. Good deep cycle batteries are best.
The smoke detectors on the ceiling will have batteries installed in them, if they chirp replace the batteries. Personally I'd check them to verify they have batteries in them, my last new rv they did not.

One of our dogs sleeps right next to the detector. About 2-3 times a day she sets it off, either by bumping it or releasing “exhaust” in close proximity.

Aside from that, for the OP, it sounds like you have a bad detector

I replaced one in Sturgis there was a tent set up Jack’s RV supply. Mine was dated 2013 camper is 2015 . Texas Traliver said it’s connected to the battery He is right mine has a 15 amp fuse . Mine is near the floor secured with two screws holding it . I opened all the windows and doors turned the propane off. I move the detector in the garage still chirping. I had three wires the older style , the newer detectors has two wires there’s still three wires coming out of the wall. I will be pulling the fuse from now on when in storage.

There was a time that RV’s came with an LP detector that you had to turn on, wait for it to do it’s thing before the propane would flow. There was a solenoid on the line that was wired to the detector, that’s probably what the 3 wire ones are for, retrofit.

When my LP detector started chirping I found the problem in my baggage compartment. I had a small propane bottle for a camp stove that was leaking . I don't do that anymore, I keep it in the bed of my pickup when camping now.
