5th Wheel and Tool Box

I want to purchase a tool box but concerned about the 5th clearing the box. My TV is a long bed and use a B&W hitch. The tool box is not low profile. It sticks up 5.5" above the side walls. I would hook up and measure but my 5th is currently 400 miles away. Any thoughts?

I have a tall toolbox on my truck. It measures and looks like it would work. On level ground it clears but any contour of the ground or site this can happen. Wish I hadn't gone that route.

Can't speak for your Montana but we had a 2011 Cougar 318SAB and had a cross bed tool box. No problem with clearance. It depends on the height you set the 5th wheel hitch.

I was surprised when I heard stories of the truck sides getting damaged by the rig. Sitting level everything looks like there is plenty of room. But I guess when maneuvering in/out of the various contours in a campsite weird things happen I guess you can look at the good side, without that tool box you will have more available payload lol

I had a toolbox on my 8' bed and never had a problem and towed several different 5ers with it. Mine only stood up about 3" above the bed (don't remember exact dimensions). I removed it to add the auxiliary fuel tank. The one I had is linked below.

We have a 2006 36 ft Montana and only have about 5 inches between it and the top of the bed of our 2013 Chevy 3500 HD dually with an 8ft bed. Last year I placed my existing tool box in the bed that was about 5 inches higher than the bed and hooked up. I didn't drive anywhere but didn't like was I saw. Turning and checking clearances especially on nonlevel ground is tough enough without worrying about just one more thing. I invested in a tool box that is lower than the bed height.

I used to have a 4 section hard top tonneau cover that folded up behind the rear window of the truck. It stuck up maybe an inch and a half or so, two at most. I scratched the front cap once unknowingly until after and I was home washing it. It drove me crazy for about 2 years as to where that scratch came from. Then one day I was pulling out of a dump station at a state park I used from time to time which had a real hard right hand turn with drainage ditches on bothe sides of the road. I was looking back over my shoulder knowing it was tight and when it got to a certain angle the corner of the tonneau cover was going to touch the cap. At that moment I knew where I had scratched the cap before. I backed up and maneuvered enough times to get out of there with no damage. I don't have that cover on my truck anymore, no matter how much I liked it. Be careful what you have sticking up above your bed rails, no matter how insignificant you think it is. You never know what kind of odd angle situation you might find yourself in.

If you zoom in you can see my weathergaurd box. Sits flush with the top of the bed.

Another option would be to install a sliding hitch, such as a PullRite ISR Super Glide. The super glide will move the 5er away from the tool box and eliminate a chance encounter, but it is pretty expensive, especially if you don't already have ISR rails.

Along the same line of what Sparky above suggested, but at half the price: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabel...Q&gclsrc=aw.ds
I removed our aluminum tool box and replaced it with two of the above boxes. when we left for out west coast swing. Worked just fine, and sit level with the bed. I can send you a picture if you like.

There are many flush to the rail tool boxes out there, just like mine.

I have a SuperGlide, while it is a great hitch, it didn't prevent what I posted above ^ from happening.

I know this a little older of a thread but what is the recommended height of the 5th wheel over the bed rails of the truck when properly setup?

When sitting on level ground, 6" is considered good. Extreme contours may still cause contact.

I bought a black hard plastic, latching top, container at Bimart and it fits very well under my Truxedo Lopro cover.

I would put in a sliding hitch. This is a video of my short bed slider at work. I have a low profile tool box and I tow a 2016 Montana

How many inches above the bed rails is the low profile toolbox.
