Hensley or Propride

I'm between the two, any opinions one way or the other?

I did a lot of research and ended up with the Propride mostly because of the adjustable shank because I knew I would be upgrading trucks and did not want the hassle of having to exchange shanks.

The Airstream forum is a good source of info as is Sean at Propide.

I looked on a few forums, a lot of the posts seemed a few years old. Was looking to see if anyone had a fresh perspective

One other consideration may be position of propane bottles and battery. One may be easier to install than the other. Study the installation manuals available online and decide which works best with your TT.

I have a pro pride and love it. Sean woodruff is very quick to answer any issues that arise when installing or changing to a new vehicle. Very easy to hook up and pulls the trailer behind me and never moves. I highly recommend pro pride

Have you searched Youtube for install/setup videos? They give great perspective. FWIW I would have a Propride if our payload allowed for it.

There is not much that is new to talk about since neither hitch has undergone any meaningful design changes. How many times can users keep stating that they simply work as claimed?

I considered both. I went with the proPride as I felt the design was a bit fresher. I like the wider opening on the trailer side. Third season I've owned it and near had an issue. Definitely worth the investment!

I've been wondering how well it works in situations like backing up a steep driveway, anyone have issues with that? I have to imagine there is less movement in the bar then in a ball. And if you have to disconnect and then reconnect, is it a nightmare?

I back up onto a 5 degree driveway that is 90 degrees to our street with my ProPride.

Once I back up onto the driveway, I pull forward and then back up again straight back to "unload" the trailer's suspension. The Propride head is off set from center, but I can disconnect by driving the TV forward without any problems. When it is time to reconnect, I center the head on the Propride and connect up to it as normal.

The limiting factor would be if you had to back up at an angle and one of the bars ends up being under the tongue jack. Knock on wood, but I have yet to have had this problem. In all situations I have found myself in, I have been able to pull forward a few feet so the bar is not under the jack.

If interested, I created an album of some of the mods I did to my ProPride: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/album.php?albumid=713

The mods are not necessary, but I like to tinker and tweak things to make them more robust and convenient.

Here they are (Part 1):

Since the coupler only gets removed from the ball once a season, I added a grease fitting:

I machined an aluminum disk to fit under the weight distribution jack clamp bolt to distribute the load on the frame:

I used nylon tubes on each side of the U bolts. It helps prevent the frame bracket from moving and the U bolt threads from damaging the wires:

I added an aluminum block under the weight distribution jack U bolt:

Continued in Part 2 in next post:

When mounting the frame bracket, I used the supplied steel plate on the top of the frame and made new aluminum plates for the underside of the frame bracket:

After a season of use, I found that I had too much clearance between the frame bracket and the yoke, so I added shims:

One mod I made (but no picture) was to correct a manufacturing error. The two steel spacer collars (not the brass) in the yoke assembly were to short IMO. I made new steel collars so the yoke was freer to pivot relative to the head.

Please note that I made these mods after one season because I like tinkering and saw an opportunity to improve the hitch. The hitch still worked without the mods.

We have an older Hensley. As for hitching up, never any problems. Just square up to the TT, adjust height of TT, and back in. Be sure your stinger is greased. I also back in hard once lined up just in case I'm a little out of square the hitch goes together. Just be careful, one time I backed in a little too hard and the TT moved back about 6 inches.

Propride

I've been using the ProPride for about four years and love it. I'm glad I got the PP instead of Hensley because I changed trucks, it was nice to have the adjustable shank. But I actually just signed for a new fifth-wheel and the dealer won't give me any extra for it, so this one will be going to Craigslist.
