I'm no expert but I will try to help.
We have a 2013 XLite 28sgs. When we were ordering it I asked about a ladder, the sales said he did not recommend it (salesman - Keystone ladders are junk). He (salesman) also said the roof on a XLite is soft (?) and did not recommend trying to attach a ladder to it. I carry a folding ladder (from Camping World) to sweep my slide roof. Try a search in the forum to find out more on ladders.
The Couger XLite is just that - Lite. The bumper is a very thin piece of 4x4 steel tubing. It is a unit that is welded under the camper frame rails. In my non-expert opinion I would not try to tow anything from the bumper.
By the way we love our 28SGS. Floor plan fits us perfect (just 2 of us - DW & me). No problem so far that I could'nt fix myself.
Have a great day, Allan

We also have a 2013 28SGS, we put 3000 miles on it since we took delivery. The roof material true, is not as thick as the other Cougar but the X-Lite has metal truss roof rafters and the Cougar has wood. It was worth our time to tour the factory. They build both type units on the same line, you can judge for yourself about the construction issues. We are very happy with our unit, we spend 2 to 3 month a year in our fiver this X-Lite worked very well.

We have a 29RES X-Lite and I was wondering about putting a ladder of it also. I know the dealers tech was all over the roof when he put the vent covers on the day we picked it up. We are going to add a rack on the back this winter...my brother and I are fabricators...so we will be cutting the bumper off and coming off the frame with the rack for generator, storage box and spare tire (if we don't make frame to put under trailer).

I have a 2012 Cougar X-Lite 27RKS and I had the dealer install a ladder on the back, approval came from Keystone and they said it was a completely walkable roof, of course you just need to be careful walking on it. It works great and the ladder is very stable on the back, so glad I installed it, makes getting on the roof for inspecting and cleaning much easier. Did you end up having one installed or did you find out if you can, you would think if I can, you could as well....

We got our 28 sgs in august and have 45 nights in it and love it. I just use one of the expandable ladders to access the roof. I made a hitch to bolt onto the frame as the 4" square tube is not strong enough. I took my spare tire off of the bumper as well.

Hello: In your 28sgs do you have chairs or recliners? I am thinking about purchasing this model and want to get recliners - any thoughts, thanks. Joseph

When we ordered our 28SGS (about a year ago) recliners where not an option. DW & I desided to try the chairs (rockers) for a while and then try to find recliners that would fit. The chairs are OK and we use ottomens. recliners are hard to find that are small enough the fit in the space when slides are in (You turn chairs side-ways, about 32"). We are still looking for the right recliners.
Enjoy,
Allan & Sadie

Would love to see scans of a rear ladder on a Cougar XLite.
Thanks, Allan

Congrads on your purchase of the 28sgs. We love the floor plan as it affords such a large living area with large windows, and a direct view of the TV from all seating positions.
As far as the ladder goes, I don't know where the controversy comes from on this subject, but I purchased mine from a very large dealer in Northeaster Wisconsin and they had no idea why I questioned why a ladder could not be installed.
My ladder is as solid as rock, alto they did caution me as to not hold any rock and roll dancing on the roof.
As far as the bumper, it is weak and I would not recommend any attempt to use it as a support for much of anything. The frame is also nothing to brag about and I am looking into what welding shops are willing to attach a scooter frame capable of carrying a scooter. I have one who says no problem, but I will not be getting the FW to him until this fall.

Ladder on the Back
I was told when I asked the question that it wasn't the roof that wouldn't support the ladder or walking on it - the rear wall doesn't have any cross studding to mount the ladder to. So I also bought one of the extending ladders.

I picked up a swivel Recliner w/ottoman @ Big Lot for about $250 , very comfortable
and lighter and a bit smaller than the swivel rocker that came with it. No problem with the slide. Also contacted the factory rep about a ladder for my 2013 and it has backing, they stopped in the mid 2014 models. Don't want to be on top much , but want to hang my bike. Happy trails. Bart

28SGS layout
My wife and I really like the dual slide layout of the 28SGS X-lite, the room it provides in the back area just seems so nice. We're settling for our 29RLS, and won't change, but we're envious! Of course, I can't complain about our unit either. Enjoy.

My 2015 28SGS came from the factory with a roof ladder. Have been up there a couple times already, and everything feels rock solid for this 250 pounder.

Funny, how those of us that have dealer installed ladders, don't see it as a problem, but those that talk to others, without ladders see it as a problem.

Chairs that fit
My 28sgs has platform rockers with no head rest , for fear of whiplash as I sometimes doze of out with one and found a recliner w/ ottman ,both rockers . Light enough and fit . $220 +_ at Big Lots . At that price if it falls apart , so. By the way it seems sturdy. As to the Ladder 2013's can use them , no to newer mds. This is from the factory rep. Also the roof well support limited weight , newer ,no. I got mine through Amazon with a roof rack, looks great and now have a Bike hanger . More mods to go.
my 28
