2008 Ford 6.4L Reviews

Hi everyone. We are looking for a used truck to pull a 33' Everest and wondered about the 6.4L in the 2008 Ford 350 DRW. I saw the post below on the 6.0L and was wondering if the 6.4L had similar issues? This is our first 5th wheel and appreciate any advice. Heading out west (we live in TN) next year and possibly Alaska in 2016.

I've owned my 2010 6.4L for 4 years and it has been an awesome truck. The 6.4L is a vast departure from the 6.0L on multiple fronts and is there-by more reliable. In stock form with the emissions equipment intact (DPF and EGR) it is a decent truck but suffers from poor mileage. If you run race programming and remove the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) the 6.4L is an animal and an amazing tow rig. While running the race programming you can expect mileage increases around 3-4 mpg and is capable of making 560+hp. I tow on a tune that makes around 350hp and 750ft-lb of torque and it gets my Carbon down the road well. If you are going to leave the truck entirely stock it will be more reliable than the 6.0 but it will not be a mileage getter by any means.

I've owned an '08 F250 for a year now and am nothing but pleased. Totally stock, I run a Lucas Oil additive and have gone from 11mpg to 13mpg average as a daily driver up and down a canyon, climbing 4000' each morning. On the highway I've reached 20mpg. 77K miles.

Towing and hauling is what these were built for (we tow a 26BHSWE with a gross of 7,700) the F250 may be a little over built and I'm not sure how it's not a 350 considering the GVW is 10K and gross combined is 23K- they're very underrated. An F350 should be off the charts.

Interior and driving are awesome, I've had nothing but compliments from passengers and close friends that I've let borrow.

I have owned my 2008 Ford F350 DRW for 3 years now and love it. We have pulled our Fuzion across country as well as down to Florida multiple times without issue. The only small things we have run across are having to replace the radiator (Sprung a leak) and with one of the thermostats.

Love the truck

I have had my 6.4 since new in 08 and the only problem I have had is a new radiator to the tune of $1600. I was past the Ford deadline by 2 months to having that paid for under warranty. Ford new about the problems with the radiators. I pull a 37 foot and once you get to 65 it stays in overdrive and rarely gets out of it even on fairly good grades. This truck is a beast when it comes to pulling. I call it Tugger for a nick name.. I had a 7.3 which was a great engine and a little better mileage but my 6.4 will out pull and accelerate much faster. You need to say goodby to the regeneration process and let this engine breath it will come to life. Empty on the road driving easy I can just touch 20mpg. Pulling my trailer 10mpg.

The 6.4's are known as fuel hogs!

Try looking at a Cummins of the same year or a 2007 5.9! Better mileage and a ton of torque.
I run 19,000+ GCVW, and get 12 to 13 mpg towing.

My '06 Cummins only got 10-11 mpg towing a 7,900lb Cougar! Our Powerstroke gets that pulling our newer 10,000+ Cougar 5er!

Life is more than just Dodge. I will take the better interior room and comfort, and the better suspension/ride of a Ford any day over all the past 5 Dodge trucks we have owned. Maybe the Powerstrokes don't have all the torque the Cummins does, but SO what. Mine, as well as the others on this forum, gets the job done in style and comfort.

I thought they fixed that in the 6.4? And are you sure the cab has to come off for that? My mechanic here that worked on my 6.0 last (not for the fuel pump, just speed sensors), said there is a way to fix the hpfp on the 6.0 without taking cab off. Just takes a lot of time.

That is what I would call the PITA about the 6.4. ANY time the turbos have to come off, the cab has to too. If my mechanic was correct, then the cab of a 6.0 only comes off for engine removal. When we bought ours, the oil cooler had to be replaced, which the dealer paid for most. The 6.0 curse there is that the turbo and manifold has to come off. At least the 6.4 doesn't have that problem for something so simple. Only wish I could have swung having an egr delete/or cooler put in then!

thanks

Thanks for all the great information. Great to have a board to ask questions. We still have a couple months to make a decision. I have a Dodge now but it's not big enough to pull the 5th. We're looking at a couple of 2008 models now but not in any hurry.
