We go down about every other year. Last year's one week trip was abysmal mainly because a low pressure system set up and it rained the entire week and the campground is right on the beach. Fairly easy getting in and out. Biggest issue is depending on what time of year you go, the traffic is insane as you have one road in/out and tons of construction cause the bridge has suffered some damage from all the storms recently. Like I said, it is the timing that is everything. Higher risk of hurricanes and tropical storms after August 1st along with the traffic. They will not hesitate to kick people out and evacuate which is a bear with so many tourists in houses and campers and only a one lane road to leave...Once you get to the Chesapeake area, you will be subject to the 168 bypass toll which is right near where I live. Many of the locals take the Battlefield Blvd around it to avoid paying. My recommendation is to pay cause the trip around gets packed in the summer from locals who live here.. Not meant to scare you away. We love Hatteras and have been all up and down the Outer Banks having lived here for 20 years. There are good times and bad times and you are coming in peak season. I think the only thing you will deal with is some traffic issues which is to be expected. Storm risk should be minimal at that time of year!!! Good Luck.

64 construction has been ongoing for decades. It is no different than 95. I just took 64 from Charlottsville back to Hampton Roads near the NC border and only a couple of one mile areas so not really bad at all.
