Insurance?

So, we pick up our Cougar 30 RLS tomorrow and need to add insurance. Seems things are little different in the 5th wheel world...

Our quotes don't include regular liability. I presume that is covered by the policy on the tow vehicle?

They do include a very little so-called, "vacation liability" covering damage or injury our parked trailer might cause... seems like higher limits on this coverage might be advisable?

There is a personal property coverage with a tiny limit ($1000). Doesn't my regular homeowners/renters policy cover my personal belongings in the trailer? Or would this be for trailer accessories, like solar power?

Collision and comprehensive seem straightforward.

Insurance is a state governed industry as far as "consumer insurance" is concerned. Check with your state's insurance commissioner's office for what is "required".

I'd suggest you thoroughly read and understand the policies before signing the policy contract.

^^^ What Marshall said. Every state has a "different interpretation" of how to manage insurance for automobiles, RV's and other trailers. What is "mandatory and you go to jail for" in one state is/can be optional in another state. What one state requires, the states adjoining its borders may consider not required.

Check with YOUR insurance agent, state insurance commission, even your dealership (so long as they aren't selling you the insurance) for recommendations, then make your choices based on YOUR financial/legal situation, not on the advice of someone "on the other side of the USA" who is subject to an entirely different set of rules and has significantly different legal and financial obligations...…

If your tow vehicle has insurance in the state that you live and reside at then you are can travel in other states and not have to worry about the insurance rules in the other states. If you move to a new state then you have to buy a new policy in that state.

I suggest that you get high limits of liability for your tow vehicle at least, Bodily Injury of 250,000 each person and 500,000 each occurrence. Then get a separate policy called a personal umbrella that provides an additional layer of coverage normally 1,000,00. Check with your insurance agent and have him give you a quote.

On the RV itself you want to have coverage on your rv itself. The amount of coverage you can adjust the value each year so you are not overpaying on your premiums.

Personal property with replacement cost coverage, the advantage is that the deductible is lower on the RV policy then on your homeowners' policy.

Other coverage options vary from company to company, some are towing and labor, premises liability while unhooked, coverage for insect and vermin, the roof for wear and tear, loss of use.

Its good to get quotes and compare the coverage and cost.

No. I was just trying to understand the different coverages offered, and making sure the tow vehicle's ins covered liability when moving.

Our agent explained it all.

We shop quotes comprehensively every couple of years and did so this summer. On this new purchase we just got two quotes, one from our vehicle insurer and one from our home insurer. They were pretty comparable and we thought fairly reasonable, so we are good.

Thanks all!.

Some companies offer coverage that provides for full replacement costs in the event the RV is totally destroyed. Given the rate at which these campers depreciate after purchase, it is worth taking a look.
We had our trailer insured with a rider on our truck policy (along with the afore mentioned umbrella for liability). Our agent set us up with a policy from Foremost which covers the full replacement cost for the first 5 years. A little more per year, but worth it, n our view, for the peace of mind.
