Electric awning

Just noticed that water is staying in the plastic cover where the awning motor is. I pulled the rubber plug and quit a bit of water came out.Would it be safe to drill a small hole in the plastic end so it can drain out? It can easily go in where the awning shaft goes through. Seems like it would have a way to drain out.

I had the same problem. Lowering the other end of the awning kept the water from getting in in the first place.
