Yellowstone

My first time in my 71 years I have visited. I sure wish I visited before I ended up with COPD which limited some of the places I was able to walk. That being it is a cool place and well worth visiting.

Many years ago I owned buffalo and wasn't really interested in seeing them in the park, with the exception of one calf up close. Elk are always cool. Coyotes there have a different hair color, similar to grey wolf, but much smaller.
Having a huge interest in geology and volcanology those features were totally impressive. Got terribly lucky and got to see Steamboat Geyser erupting. Old Faithful erupted right after we got there so we didn't have to wait. It was very cold, 30 degrees with fresh snow on the ground, (May 29) and very windy. But being from a colder climate we were prepared and survived that well. Expect winter weather even in the summer at higher elevations.

As a side note, Yellowstone is well known for it's traffic issues. We found that entering the park about 7 am and going either North or South for the day was quite effective by going to our far end and working our way back to the entrance. It got busy about 11 am as well as the traffic increased greatly. Mind you this is May on weekdays. We aren't going into the park on the weekend. Parking after 10 am got very limited we are fortunate to have handicap plates which saved me a long uphill walk one time.
There are some cool side trips outside the park, albeit you may have to drive a couple hours each way. Lakes, Idaho State Parks and such. Since we are avoiding the park on the weekend we are running over to Spencer Id, as I have an interest in crystals, gems, minerals, etc.
Much of the park you really don't want to drag an RV through unless you have a site in the park to camp. Roads are good, but narrow and twisty. We camped in Idaho 20 miles from the park entrance. There are closer places.
Hope this helps anyone who wants feedback about an old fart visiting Yellowstone. Be sure you have your respiratory and heart medications.

Been a few years since we did the Yellowstone tour.
We stayed at Jackson lake campground which is almost center between Jackson, WY and the South entrance to the park. Very nice campground and well equipped with any and everything you would need. You'll definitely need reservations a year in advance.
Never will forget the experience of being "mugged" by a herd of Bison crossing the road the day we decided to drive down to Jackson. They don't care and just keep coming across the road. We were first in line to stop when it happened and was able to get some great pictures!
We ended up at Jackson campground because the year we went the main campground in Yellowstone we wanted to stay at was closed for remodel.
Yellowstone is a must see for anyone who has never or like me someone who hadn't been in over 50 years. Seeing it through the eyes of an aged adult from a young child are two different trips!

We just spent a week at Flagg Ranch in the Grand Tetons, then a week at Henry's lake in Idaho to do day trips to Yellowstone. We found visiting after 2 pm was best for traffic. Roads are in good shape. The biggest problem taking the rig through the park was traffic stopping whenever a Moose or Bear was spotted.
