Refrigerator light

The light is out in my RM1350. Looking at the bulb, the filament appears intact and using a Ohmeter on the bulb alone shows that it is not 'open'.

I put a DC voltmeter on the tabs that the bulb mounts in. With the white toggle switches open (down), I read 9.58v. With them closed (up) I read 7.11v. I also tried this with the kept door closed (so the 2 prongs in the lower left corner where contacted and got the same results.

This is too weird! I woulds have expected 12V with the toggles closed and nothing when it was open.

?????

I agree with your assessment. Sounds like a bad ground or partially shorted power wire.

Did you try checking the voltage from the hot tab to a known good ground? That should show 12 vdc if all is ok.

Then check resistance on the other tab to a good ground. Should be infinite.

Any variation in these readings should point you in the right direction for a fix.

The switches on fridges are known to be a bit funky and the contacts may require a good cleaning.

Problem is I have no idea how to identify a reliable ground short of disassembling the unit and I don't need the light that bad.

DocData757, Howdy;

My problems started out with the bulb not functioning.
Skim down to my post and you may find some help.

What I learned was the 3 amp. fuse controls the whole shootin' match.
The ones discussed are located in the Fridg's control box (outside).

Hope this helps,

The chassis of the fridge should be a decent ground. Try touching the meter probe to an exposed screw head that you know goes in to the metal frame of the refrigerator.

I unplugged the unit from 12ov and it automatically switched over to LP This indicates to me that the 12V circuit is ok.

Now... on to finding a ground.

It's possible that box uses low voltage bulbs. if so, the voltages you are reading may be created by a voltage regulator circuit on a board. Before I started tearing into the wiring and removing panels lookin for a phantom ground, I would take a few minutes and call Dometic Tech support and tell them what you have. They may have a simple fix, or at the least point you to the problem, or even better, walk you through some troubleshooting.

The reason I posted the link earlier is my bulb quit working and everything was fine .......... for about 2 to 3 weeeks later. then I lost a full refer full of groceries (I full time).

Take the fuses OUT of their holders (I didn't... homer moment), and check them for continuety ..... Start with the 3 amp. fuse. It on the 12 vDC side and controls the whole shootin' match.
