external propane hookup

Has anyone had luck finding an adaptor hose to connect to the external propane port? I tried to buy one at the dealer when I picked up my trailer, but was told they didn't have any to fit. Wanting to hook up my Coleman road trip.

You need to first make the determination as to what the device requires. Does it need unregulated LP or regulated? Usually the quick connect under the coach is after the regulator from the main LP bottles. I have a Coleman camp grill that needs unregulated LP so I use a special hose to go directly to an LP bottle as an unregulated source and do away with the small portable bottle. On this device the regulator and flow control is on the LP extention rod that came with the stove. Does your device have a regulator already buit in? If so then you need to go directly to an LP bottle. I carry a seperate 20lb bottle that I use with a hose I bought from CW. I also have another hose with a quick connect and a regulator that I use for a Suburban portable stove retrofitted into an outside stand that can be moved around the campground with the bottle. I also bought this hose at CW.

If you are hooking to the low pressure side of the propane system (after the regulator) and have the female quick coupler http://tweetys.com/quick-connector--...tural-gas.aspx all you have to do is buy the male fitting and make a hose. I made my own hose. Mainly because you can't buy a hose to hook directly to the road trip as hooking the hose to the road trip regulator will not work. You will have to take the regulator off of the grill and hook the hose to the pipe that unscrews from the regulator to make it work. I have done this with my roadtrip grill and it works well. If you are hooking to high pressure propane (before the regulator) then you can leave the regulator on the grill and use one of these http://tweetys.com/adapter-hoses.aspx Hope this helps.

Go to www.bigway.com. They have all kinds & lengths of propane hoses & fittings.

So, I can get rid of the regulator on the grille itself and connect directly? What is the RV propane system regulated at compared to the green bottles?

The separate 5 gal bottle is an option as there are adaptors to hook directly. But the plan is to get rid of having to carry another fuel source when I already have more than enough on board.

I'm pretty unfamilar with propane setups and all of the searching that I have done hasn't really helped.

You can get rid of the regulator on the grill as long as you are getting your propane down stream of the regulator on the trailer. The small green bottles are high pressure.

Unscrew the regulator off of the adaptor for the grill and plumb it to your regulated trailer propane. You will have to use the adapter that the regulator screws into as it is specially designed for the road trip.

If the regulator can be unscrewed from the grill, you can adapt a male quick Connect fitting to the grill. The thread sizes is probably 1/8" NPT. Fittings are available everywhere. Be sure to use yellow thread tape for gas, not white. You will have to adapt the female QC to your hose. Fittings for that are also available everywhere. If the burnr conrol and regulator are one assembly, then this will not work and you'll have to use either the green disposables or tie into the high side of your propane system. I've posted photos on a couple of threads about this, as this is a frequent topic. A search will find them for you.

I have a road trip by coleman I to want to use the propane from the trailer
but after you take the regulator off the road trip the fitting is not 1/8,it
is colemans own size.
I called coleman asked about a adapter they have none and have no
intention of making one,they said there grill is not intended to be
conected to a trailers propane tanks.
a search will find on this fourm someone that has modified the regulator.
I though I sent him a PM about it but I guess I did something wrong,I will
have to find it again and PM him again he will send details on how he
modified the regulator.

OK, I shot from the hip on the thread size and I missed. Take the part that you unscrewed, if you were able to do so, to a hardware store and have them determine the correct size. I assure you, it's a common thread size. I seriously doubt that Coleman or any other manufacturer is going to go to the expense of tooling up and making fittings with proprirtary thread sizes when there are plent of them out there.
As I sai before, of the regulator and flame control are made as one unit, then you're out of luck. Otherwise there are parts out there that will let you do what you want to do.

sorry to say coleman did make there own fitting, I took my to pluming and
hardware stores they have no match,the only fix is to drill out there regulator
and use it as part of the fitting as jje1960 did he said he would send details
of how he did if anybody wanted them I PM him have not herd back.

The regulator and controls are separate on my grille. So I'm good there.

I wouldn't be suprised to find that they would be using unique thread sizes and fittings. Helps to prevent modifications being made from a safety liability standpoint

I have the road trip pual jr I think almost the same as coleman road trip
mine does have a temp gage on top, controls out frount regulator in back
still haven't heard from jje1960,if you go to general rv issuse and look at
propane hose jje1960 thread #11 he tells what he did,I was just looking
for more details from him.

the hose is not the problem, it's the fitting from the grill coleman has a
fitting of there own coming out of the grill to the regulator when you take
the regulator off the fitting is a little smaller then 1/8 nothing fits it
jje1960 only name I tave for him modified the regulator, he said he would
give details on how he did if anyone wanted to know.
so when I did a search to try and find him,I see he went to Bristol to watch

so I am hoping he will reply when he gets home.

Ok, try this..Take the regulator off of the fitting that goes to the grill and just push a hose up on the fitting and use a hose clamp to hold the hose to the fitting. I have done it this way as well. Its low pressure gas and will not leak so long as the hose clamp is tight. Find the hose that fits the grill fitting first then adapt it to the quick connect on the trailer.

tomorrow I'm going to go to a propane co and take my fitting and ask them
if I can put a hose clamp on that fitting, if they say yes I will let them
make up the hose with the QC on the other end,and will get back to post
maybe a day or two.
