LED problem.... Please help

I recently replaced all lights with new LED bulbs both inside and out. Since then when I apply the brakes or turn signals all the exterior lights come on. Either solid for braking or blinking for turn signals. Its cool to look at at night but it doesn't tell people which direction I'm turning.

Would appreciate any help.

Is it possible that your RV was doing this all along and you just now noticed the problem? There isn't a "common wiring" connection between the three circuits, turn signals, running lights/tail lights and the remaining 12 VDC supply system (other than using the same ground potential). So, it really doesn't seem likely that the LED's are the culprit here. However anything is possible, so:

Remove all the OUTSIDE LED's, hook up the trailer to your tow vehicle, turn on the turn signal, start reinstalling the LED's one at a time. Walk around and check your clearance lights after every installation. If you find the one that's making them blink, take it back out, continue installing the remaining ones. Remove any that cause the blinking. Once you're done, then install incandescent bulbs in those fixtures that were causing blinking. See if they cause blinking. If they do, it's not the LED's, if they don't blink, you've probably got a defective LED assembly.

I'd guess that one LED has a short to ground "somewhere" in its circuitry, but as I said in the beginning, The three lighting systems aren't interconnected except for the same ground.

Could this be a problem with 7 pin connector? Sometimes I use a small fuse to jump 7 to 1 (I think) and it will light all the exterior lamps on my Springdale. Some use a flasher to make it all blink.

I have the trailer at the shop to flooring that split. I will get it back on Wednesday and start to remove the leds. It wasn't like this before so I will look for a defective one. Thanks for the advise

Pulled all bulbs - still blinking

Hi,

Pulled all the bulbs and it seemed to narrow it down to the back brake/turn signal lamps. When the trucks left turn signal is lit, the trailer lamps all light up and when the brake/turn signal lamp is removed all the other lamps turn off. Same on both sides. Same with the brake lights if either back bulb is in place everything lights up. And this is with LED and non LED.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Then it's not the LED's that are causing the problem. It sounds like you have the tail light/brake lights connected and there's a feedback voltage getting to the running lights. If you can see the connections, there should be three wires, one to the tail light filament, one to the brake light/turn signal filament and a ground. It's possible that in the socket assembly, there's a bent connector or spring that's touching the "other side" of the bulb ????

Since it occurs with incandescent and LED's, it's a socket or a tail light assembly issue. It was probably doing this all along and you just didn't notice. If you are sitll under warranty, might as well let the dealer handle the troubleshooting and the expense of changing out the tail light assemblies.

When I have had issues with the wrong light(s) blinking on a trailer it almost always was a defective ground.

Just to be clear, do I take off the tail light assemblies and search for a faulty ground or is it possibly at the trailer/truck hook up?

Generally agree with JRTJH. I think (now that I read all the posts ) one of the tail/brake/turn light sockets may be bad. Is there any corrosion on the socket. Corrosion can create a bad ground. I had an old motor home once and had to take every marker light and re-tighten the ground wires. Good luck.

I guess its replacement of the tail light assemblies

Thanks everyone for the help. Wasn't sure if it is at the back or the front when it comes to the ground. The tail light assemblies look good, but I will replace.

LED problem solved

The whole problem was resolved when someone showed me the new LED bulb didn't have two lead elements on the bottom for both the brake and turn signal. Replaced the two bulbs with dual element bulbs and the problem went away. Thanks to all who responded.
