The battle for Vicksburg

Part of what we do on our trips is visit Civil War battlefields and museums. I was “taught” this stuff as a kid, but I wasn't interested in “old news” back then. Now I understand how that conflict shapes who we are as Americans, I've become more interested.
The battle for Vicksburg was one of the most complex and protracted battles of the war. It's not easy to describe it in 3 minutes, but I gave it a shot.

Excellent video Scott! We travel to/through Vicksburg a number of times each year and used to visit the park quite often. On every visit it seems I learn something else...there's a lot to take in. The U.S.S. Cairo is extremely interesting to me and folks should go see it if for no other reason than to marvel at how the thing stayed afloat.

Despite what some say in our current society, these men, on both sides, were good men that were compelled to fight for their beliefs and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice....and many did. The total men (our ancestors) killed in the Civil War, 620,000, is mind boggling. That total equals the number of men lost in every war fought by America prior to Vietnam including WWI and WWII. Many of us had ancestors that fought there for what they held dear. The sheer amount of blood shed is not only sobering but deserves respect from anyone/everyone.

Quite true Danny. The amazing thing is, the size of the nation's population was a lot smaller than it is today. So the proportion of the nation that was affected is hard to fathom.
We have been profoundly affected and deeply touched touring these battlefields and other sites. A really sobering place to visit is Andersonville POW camp.
Those who glibly bandy about suggestions that we should have another Civil War or “a national divorce” should take the time to study what the effects of that really are.
