what's my trailer's value

Hello - the wife and I are ready to upgrade from our Springdale mini and some friends and family have expressed an interest in it, and we were wondering where to find the best and fairest value for our rig? Just the camper, grandson has already spoken for our tow vehicle. Also, if aforementioned parties pass, where is the most effective place to post said camper? Thanks

You'll always get a better price in a private sale than from a dealer or a trade-in, but it's lots more work for you. I've had good luck on Craigslist (you have to weed out the crazies and the bots and be willing to be real patient to find a buyer), and your local area may have a for-sale "bulletin board" list on Facebook.

If by "where to find the best and fairest value for our rig" you meant that you wanted to get it valuated, you can use Good Sam's valuator here [LINK].

Personally, I use RV Trader (www.Rv trader.com) as a reference whenever I am attempting to determine a value. It doesn’t tell you the transaction price but it will give you a starting point. Plus you can see comparisons in your geographic area. Once I know how much I want to ask for the RV, I would than list on Face book market place.

We have been researching this lately and agree that Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace are good venues to post your trailer. In determining value, you can try RV Trader to get an idea of asking prices in your area. I have also used NADA Guides (JD Power). Your best bet is to research multiple sources to get an idea on value.

What is the model number of your camper? Was going to look at comps on various sites but it seems there are a lot of Springdale models.

When I traded mine in last month, I used JDPower's site as a guide. Turns out, the dealer was within $500 of actual trade in value and I was pleased with that...

Comps on the internet are always a good starting spot. Do a search on "Keystone 1760 BH" and follow the links.

Just an FYI, you have to remember when using any of the RV pricing programs, dealerships are always going to low-ball you. Then when they sell your RV they over-price. That's how they make their profit.

Somewhere between these two figures is what a non-dealership (private) sale will sell at. You'll get slightly higher than what a dealer is willing to give for either cash or a trade-in, and the seller will be able to buy from you less than what the dealership sells for.

If you have a loan on the camper, being a 2021 model, you cannot expect expect to sell it for the remaining balance of your loan, unless you paid down about half at the time of your purchase. If you added on extended warranties, exterior protections, interior fabric treatments, gap insurance, your state taxers, and all of that, then you will definitely be upside down.

If you purchased and paid in full at the time of purchase, then you can establish any price you feel is good and see if the buyer is willing to pay. Then the negation and tit-for-tat begins until you reach a middle ground.

I did a quick internet search and this was my first "hit: Click here ... $19781. But you will never be able to sell your to the dealership for that amount. They will probably purchase it for $13000 or $14000 (really)!

Rvs are similar to vehicles in only this one respect.
The dealer will offer wholesale price for your trade sight unseen, regardless of condition & then price it for sale at full retail.
Pick a price in between to sell privately & be willing to negotiate.
Unfortunately rvs aren't currently selling too quickly in the area we live. Dealers lots are packed full of new & used.
We have a couple friends & neighbors that have been trying to sell theirs for several months & only getting extremely low ball offers.

rvtrader.com has 44 for sale new and used. A new 2022 is going for as low as $17K. Note that prices for new units may have tons of other costs added...

Just a few thoughts.
1. Friends & family are usually looking for a GREAT deal…not so much a FAIR deal. And good luck getting paid by family members on an installment plan.
2. Have you priced newer tow vehicles? Yikes!
3. Bigger RV. More tow weight, more gas ($4/gal.) to move it down the road, a little more effort to back into a campsite.
4. Are you going to be RVing MORE than before? How is your health and physical condition? Are you the default weekend babysitters?

I can be such a buzz kill, I know. But I would look at an upgrade in a big picture way and not just the dollars & cents.
Good luck. Hope you enjoy your choices. 😎👍

Thanks for sharing!

A) I'm offering a "fair" deal not a great deal to whoever is interested. We are not playing banker for anyone.
B) We have discovered that because of the way we like to travel, our age and physical condition, we are looking at class "C"s as our upgrade option for some of the very reasons you mention.
C) We have every intention of RVing more, my wife homeschools the g-kids so they would be accompanying us for both fun and education.
D) There is no buzz to kill - we definitely have a big picture/end goal in mind and are working through all our options and scenarios to do what's best for us both short and long term.

You state your looking at class Cs.
We've considered those also as a downsize but all of them seemed very cramped close quarters compared to a TT or smaller class A of the same length due to the lowered cockpit, once parked is pretty much useless space. With 2 adults & a couple kids I'd think it would get claustrophobic very quickly. Just my .02!

My sister & BIL had an expensive Class C and dragging there jeep for transportation when they parked was a bit of a pain. The cabin was laid out fairly cleverly to mask the lack of space and there was a E-W bed in the back in a slide which helped. The couch was in a slide out in the main cabin. They had leather seats and came with a couple of cats who made sport with the seats and it was an expensive repair so the thing could be sold. They now have a nice little Forest River bumper pull.
