4005 – South for the winter
After leaving Greenville, SC we stayed at 5 different RV Parks/CGs during the fall and winter. Basically, they were all planned stops. We just had to work them in for smooth transitions from place to place.
Because we had to wait a week for reservations at the Pelican Roost RV Park at Naval Station, Mayport, FL we had to stay at Flamingo Lakes RV Park out near the Jacksonville, FL airport. IT’s large and expensive but well maintained and has its own restaurant on the water.
Our reservation at Pelican Roost was two weeks. We were hoping to stay before the northeasters showed-up. We missed it by two days. On our last day there the wind and rain were so strong we had to retrace all of our slides and put towels in all of the right-side windows. The force of the windy rain was forcing water through the window weep holes. The weather subsided on the day we moved to the Naval Air Station Jacksonville RV Park for two more weeks. That RV Park had a 42-day yearly limit and we liked to keep lots of days in reserve in case we came to visit family.
From NAS Jacksonville we moved to the smallish American Legion RV Park for a month. Because it’s a private club, residents can only stay a month at a time. You have to actually move out for 24 hours than another 30 days can start if you move back in.
At the end of our 30 day-stay moved to Pacetties RV Park at St. Augustine, FL. It was right on trout creek. The deep cool waters of Trout Creek hold some of the largest Black Crappie in FL waters. Since then, Pacetties RV Park has been sold and condos were built there.
At a super truck store in VA I purchased a special set of rails for our dually. Without a boat on them they whistled, and I took them off for long trips without having the boat.
In FL I purchased an 8’ Walker Bay and rigged it with a front mount for a trolling motor. At the American Legion RV Park, we were situated right on the Cedar River. At Pacetties RV Park we were right beside Trout Creek. I did a lot of fishing from that little boat.
