Plastic slide gear stripped

Lippert (I think) rack and pinion gear driven slideout. Gear in picture has teeth chewed off and slide had to be manually retracted. Had to first lift the 12' slide about an inch using jack and cribbing before I could turn the nut on the end of the shaft. There is no room for a drill and I tried using an air wrench but it didn't have enough power so I spent two hours cranking it in.

Once in, I removed the ground wire so there was no chance of getting shocked and removed the inspection plate (four self tapping screws). The gear in the picture is stripped. The motor says 18 to 1 so this must be 18 tooth.

Do I have to remove the motor to get that gear out? The inspection plate won't slide over the shaft due a lip on the shaft. Can't really tell if the other gear is OK all the way around. Some tech help would be appreciated. thanks

Also, the original gear was plastic... saw a metal replacement on eBay. Does a metal gear make sense?

Yes, without a doubt go to the metal gear.
Sorry without more pics at angles I can't tell how they come off. Most have a key-way and set screws or a flat on the shaft and a retaining bolt on the end of the shaft.

Also the reference of 18 to 1 is the gear ratio of the motor/gearbox and not reference to number of teeth. Motor turns 18 revolutions and the output shaft turns 1 revolution thus 18:1

You need to clean off all the grease, it may have a snap ring.

Cleaned the grease; no snap ring or e clip. It just slides on that little shaft.

I bet the motor has to come out then.

Took the motor out and saw that both the inner and outer gears are ruined. The inner keeps the outer from moving too far and while it has a circlip I think there is a bolt through the drive shaft that will allow me to pull the inner ring out without removing the circlip which would be awkward under the camper. Otherwise I will try and get the circlip out.

Also posting a pic of an eBay gear assembly with both gears shown; you can see the circlip on the metal part; don't believe this one will work on my camper as it is a 28:1.

Got the whole mess out. Decided to buy a complete assembly and hoping it is the right one. Here is the one I bought; dimensions look pretty good.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09SYPNGNQ...hk_typ_imgToDp

I decided it would just as well to replace the whole thing rather than the gears. My camper is older and don't think any of the gears I saw would work. The teeth were slanted on the replacements and mine are cut square, if that makes any sense. I have been at this for a number of hours and will write up a how-to tomorrow.

The gear facing is a definite upgrade. Should run smoother, and last longer

Ordered one from Amazon and should be here Tuesday. Bet it is less trouble to install than figuring out how to get it off. Once you know, it is a snap except for have to crawl under my steps (kind of tight for a fat boy). I am kind of miffed as we were supposed to go spend a few days at Old River Road RV Resort near Kerrville and had to cancel but will reschedule as soon as I get the slide working again.

Those long rows of teeth really look like they could use lubed but I am kind of nervous about grease. Seems grease attracts crud. I sprayed them with silicon lube I use in my business but that doesn't seem like the right stuff either. What is the best lube for those teeth?

Just thought about this... new motor assembly supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It appears to have red and black wires for connection to the black and white 12V leads coming off the trailer. If there is no install documentation, how would I determine which wire on the new motor is positive and which is negative? I don't want to hook up backwards and possibly strips the gears in the new one.

I'm assuming the new motor would come with something that shows what which wire to the motor goes to + and -. For the existing wire just use a VOM and check which wire has battery when the slide switch is activated then you know which one goes where.

Just a thought, If at all possible connect it to the wires prior to installing it to verify the correct rotation.

If the slide is in "the middle of travel" meaning not fully extended or retracted, just twist the wire ends together and then press the button for a second to determine if its correct. Since there are only 2 wires to the motor the swith simply reverses polarity to make the motor turn one direction or the other.

Chuck, that would be a good idea but I had laid under the camper getting dirt in my face for almost two hours cranking the slide in with the nut on the end of the shaft using a 25mm open end wrench. My air ratchet wasn't strong enough to turn it. I suspect, in retrospect that 40 PSI out pressure on my tank was the cause.

The motor I received from Amazon had a red and black wire coming out; just like the old one. Hooked them up, just like the old one hoping things would work as they should. What happens if you have them connected backwards is that if you push in at the trailer control, the slide will move out. You then reconnect them the opposite. Actually had black to black and red to white this time Icamper has black and white wires to power the motor).

All is now fixed and we have reservations for NEXT WEEKEND at Old River Road RV Resort near Kerrville. Unfortunately, the only sites left (due the Memorial Day weekend) were back in. This should cause a show in the campground and I will have the missus sell tickets so folks can observe my backing in futility.

Danny, Solo operator here. Slide switch is up in the cabin and the ol' fat boy has to wiggle under the steps over road base (have a Chewy box to lessen the pain). I don't do well asking the missus to help with these things as she ends up not speaking to me for a week or two. I only had to wiggle out from under twice. First time to get a hammer as I didn't have enough muscle to push the hitch pin through and second time to reverse the electrical connections after finding I had guessed wrong the first time.

You got it!! Yup with only 2 wires, the switch just reverses positive and negative to the motor to make it turn CW/CCW.

Glad you got it fixed. BTW I was thinking about running down to Kerrville...reckon y'all have any of those tickets left?? Just kidding.

I'm going to have to take the RV to that RV park. Looks nice. I've been up and down that road but not ever in that park. Think I'll have to hook up and go there for a week here in the future. Right now we're looking at spending a couple of weeks in Fredericksburg when the peaches start coming off.

I am not much a fan of F-burg... it is for tourists mostly and everything is overpriced but they have a couple nice museums. I would also advice making reservations for the Memorial Day weekend quickly as we could only get a back in slot for next weekend... we had a pull through for this weekend but gal said they were getting close to full. They have added a ton of new slots. PM me.
