Carlisle CSL 16 tires

Has anyone used or even heard anything about these...

I'm thinking I might give them a try... ST235/85R16 G 4,400 pound & 81 MPH..

All Steel Body

I've had very good luck with the Carlisle tires in the past on smaller trailers...

Any comments?

I'd be willing to chance it. Their somewhat new design HD trailer tire has served me well. Hopefully the same fine engineering was applied to the steel cased tire. Try WalMart.com for price. They beat the heck out everyone else on my sizes.

I'm certainly leaning that way, but thought I'd ask around. Like you I've had good service from the Carlisle HD tires on both the Cougar and the Passport.

Don't know about the Carlisle's in particular but full steel belts are the way to go.

Here's the add sheet. Notice that they are also building a 15".

Thanks, GVWR of my trailer is 15K so these should provide me a nice margin of capacity at 4400 each.

Just a note: Tires for RV trailers are fitted to GAWRs to support the GVWR. Here are the actual instructions given the the vehicle manufacturer: S5.3.1 Tires. The size designation and the recommended cold inflation pressure for those tires such that the sum of the load ratings of the tires on each axle are appropriate for the GAWR. The end result of those calculations will be displayed on the vehicle certification label.

When I make notations like that they are intended to be for all readers of the thread.

The axles are 7K and the OEM tires are ST235/80R16 G .. 4035 pounds and the wheels are rated at 4400 pounds

Is there a viable reason for me not to go with the ST235/85R16 @ 4400 pounds since I have ample clearance for the 1/2 inch clearance differential.

The costs are exactly the same @ $176 each from Walmart..

The tire industry has a standard procedure to follow when plus sizing from the OE tire designated size.

In the automotive market, tire dealers have approved listings from all vehicle manufacturers and select plus sized tires from that listing.

The RV trailer tire market has no suitable (authorized) listings for plus sizing your tires. Without a recommendation from the trailer manufacturer, tire safety becomes the consumer’s total responsibility.

I just tell it as it's supposed to be done. The consumer owning the vehicle has the responsibility for its safety.

It’s been a while since you last wrote about the Carlisle CSL 16. What can you say about them now? I recently had 2 blowouts on the same trip with my Alpine and the Hispec tires have got to go!!!

I had issues with the Hi-Spec tires right away. Had one detonate and do some damage. I had used Saliun S637s on my previous 5ver and never had a problem. So I replaced the Hi-Spec bombs with Saliuns they have about 10000 miles on em and never had the first issue.

Good to know but I am already halfway down the rabbit hole with Carlisle tires and am really hoping to hear from the other person on their experience with them, if they’re still around.

That’s great news! I am 2 tires in with the Carlisle tires, I guess you would endorse moving forward with the other 3, including the spare?

I'd say so. I went all in after doing my research and replaced all my tires and spare with Carlisle and have been very happy so far. Just keep the pressure set correctly and run a TPMS to watch for issues in motion.

I had the same tire (Hi-Spec) on my Keystone and one just blew with about 2000 miles on them. After the trailer was repaired, I replaced ALL tires with Carlisles and have been happy with them. I've had them for about 9 months.

Good thread. I am looking into upgrading my current Carlisles (225/75R15 LRE) to the CSL 16 (225/75R15 LRF). Trying to find the downside other than adding roughly 60 additional pounds of weight which I do not see as a problem since I never travel with fresh water or Grey 1/2 waste water. Black 10-15 gallons tops.
I ran Carlisles on my previous Outback and now on the Cougar with absolutely no issues. The only short straw I see is the wheel and will it accept the 95psi pressure. I certainly like the +250lb buffer capacity. Hopefully the attachment links up for my summary comparison.

First, I have no personal experience with the Carlisle CSL tires. Why? When I upgraded from 4400 pound Lippert axles to 6000 pound Dexter axles, I considered the CSL but could not find any "asthetically pleasing" aluminum wheel that carried both the PSI and WEIGHT requirements. The only wheels I could find were "white steel spoke wheels with either red or blue pinstriping".

There were 15" aluminum wheels that were rated 2150 or 2830 (some with 95PSI rating) but no aluminum wheels with 3080 AND 95PSI ratings. I chose not to change out my wheels to the older "white steel spoke" type.

So, have you found wheels that have both the PSI and the WEIGHT rating? If so, would you please share the source?
