New to RVing. Is truck size for 27SAB enough?

I am new to RVing. I am looking to purchase a new Cougar 27SAB. I have a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited, 5.7 Hemi w/Etourque. Just me and my wife. Do I have enough truck or should I look for a different travel trailer?

Bumper pull weighing 8800 lbs gross and 32' long. Tongue weight will be about 1100 lbs; add passengers & cargo in cab of truck plus tools and hitch weight. The total will be your payload. Compare your estimated payload to the 1600-1700 lbs you come up with and compare that number (or whatever the true estimate is) to you payload sticker in the door frame (driver side) in your cab. You will very likely be right at or over the truck's payload. In addition, those with experience will tell you dragging a 32' camper with a half ton is not realistic.

My guess you would be over by about 700lbs.

Thanks for all the quick replys. My wife will be disappointed, but smaller trailer is in my future.

I saw half ton and thought 5th wheel. Didn't realize they did half ton TT's. Learned something new.

This is a Payload sticker. It says Combined Weight of Occupants and Cargo and the example says 3420 lbs. Is that where you are getting your payload? That 3420 in the example IS the max payload of this truck.

Yes. That is what is what is on the sticker.

I just sent a message to my truck salesman. He showed me the spec sheet at the dealership. He quickly responded back with the adds on the limited it reduced the payload from 1780#

Well, at least the salesman gave you the straight scoop. And yes, the Limited package drops a lot from your payload. That 1382 payload hurts and it won't let you have a very big trailer.

When looking at the RVs try this; up front determine what will be in your truck. First up is a hitch so remove 120lbs. Weight of family? 400? Items to carry in the truck; snacks, water, toys for kids - 40. Items in the bed of the truck - bottle jack, tools (cab), misc. - 100? That total is 660. That has to come off the 1382 available payload that you had = 722 left for tongue weight of a trailer. You can go shopping with that. How to use it?

Look at the trailers (in real life or online) and just find the gross vehicle weight. Sometimes you will need to add the dry weight and the carrying capacity. Determine the gvw and multiply by .13 (13%). If it exceeds 722 it's too heavy. Or another way - determine max gvw you can have and then search using it first. That would leave you with a search for trailer with a gvw of approx. 5500lbs. give or take. There are some variables to that but using those approximations will get you close. Unfortunately, they won't be big.

Sounds like tent camper might be possible. We had a big Coleman tent camper that we used for years and really liked at the time. To do a hard sided trailer of any appreciable size, you are going to need more truck. Feel free to check in here and get help when you get to that point.

There are lots of very nice TT's in the 5 to 6K range.
Fully loaded I'm under 5,000 lbs and we travel for weeks at a time.
Adjust your expectations.

Best advice I can give is DO NOT ask any salesman about weights, they'll spout dry weights & max tow weights, both mean ABSOLUTELY nothing in the real life rv world.
Follow the advice already given here!

I have a similar but older ram 1500 with almost the same cargo capacity. I tow a passport 2300bh which although the gvwr is 6800 it's starting weight is around 4500. Real world tow weight for me is about 5500 lbs. When loaded for camping and with the family I am near gvwr on the truck. Around 5500 or less loaded it's probably about where you need to be with that truck.

I'd say too much for the Ram. I pull a '20 Bullet 291rls with my '17 Ram 1500 with Hemi and 3.92 rear end. Its only 7,600 gross, but 34' overall. Pulls quite easily, but I would not want to go heavier and would prefer if it was shorter, but i was the only real option for certain reasons. To be honest, this one pulls better than our '19 Bullet 269rls.

We ran into a similar situation. We bought Passport 2210RBWE at 4800 pounds to pull with our 6700 pound rated Tacoma. The Tacoma had plenty of power, but felt a little wonky on downhill curves.
Researching the tongue weight and payload capacity, I found we were overloaded unless all we were carrying was the trailer. We had a payload capacity of 1200 pounds and already had 600 pounds of tongue weight. A full tank of gas and a few passengers put us right at the limit even with an empty pickup bed.
We switched to a 1500 Silverado. this gave us an additional 600 pounds of payload capacity. I feel it's a perfect match.

I do miss my Tacoma though.

Been there, done that and ended up trading in my 1500 w/5.7 for a 2500 w/6.4 gas. After pulling my 27 footer for a while it was quite apparent the 1500 was maxed out and you don't want to be maxed out. You need a cushion to absorb the unexpected events, like an emergency stop from 55 MPH to avoid a deer.

You might be happier getting the 27 footer (or longer) and swapping the 1500 for more truck. You get a better floor plan in a 27+ than you would in a smaller TT

I own a 2018 Cougar 27SAB and tow it with my 2018 F150. The 5.0 gas, 3.55, 9100, tow capacity. I have towed it all over the Oregon coast and then from Oregon to Florida. I have plenty of power and the 10 speed transmission is amazing. But I definitely know its there. I keep my speed under 65 mph, Equalizer 4 point 12000 pound hitch, and air bags. And yes, the truck can easily stop the trailer. I know I’m maxed out here. I carry no water, empty the holding tanks as soon as I can.
On the scale the total with full fuel, 36 gallons, people dog and cab stuff, 500 pounds, and the bed is empty, total is 13520. With the total GCWR of 14400, I’m a bit under. Keep the speed down and you will be fine.

Just for grins post the payload of your 150 & the GVWR of your rv before giving advice to "keep speed down & you'll be fine".
I'm guessing your payload is over or very near max as typically the payload will be exceeded long before the other weights.
