Battery

From the description, I would suggest that the converter is overcharging the battery. The fumes you smell is hydrogen sulfide ( which is poison, by the way) caused by the decomposition of the sulphuric acid in the battery.

Allowed to continue, it will boil it dry and destroy it. The converter is supposed to the change the charging voltage as the battery approaches full charge. If it is not doing this you will get what you are experiencing.

I had a similar problem with a battery on my old popup trailer last year. In my case, the battery was bad but it was 6 years old. Fortunately, I had a second battery so was able to get through the camping trip.
