I pulled the trigger on a Hank williams concert at laughlin NV sept . We talked it over and decided to visit Sequoia 6 day and visit yosemite then red wood nation forest then off to Shore line ST park 4 days then to South beach OR 4 days then back to N M. The reservation are made . What should I expect from the weather on the 2 Oregon parks in Oct ?

As a life long Oregonian of some 71 years and having been to various beaches on our coast I can tell you that each part of the coast can have a micro weather system. Fog and cold at one area while another has overcast while still another has sunshine. Records show that the high average during October is 54 with a low of 43; average rainfall for the Oregon coast is 1 inch. The only way to know for sure is to check your weather a couple days before you arrive in the area you are going to stay in, as change is more the norm then what is predicted. One good thing is you may hit a lot of fall colors which can be quite spectacular and their are breathtaking spots along the coast. South Beach is by Newport, Shore Line State park, do not recognize. Last thought is prepare for rain, the good news is the weather passes through fairly fast and is not as constant as it is in the Willamette valley. Best of luck!

Buzz nailed it. You have no idea what to expect. One thing that is very stable is the temp on the Oregon coast. It rarely varies from 55-65 even in the summer. It will get hotter when the wind blows offshore. It's actually scenic but miserable most the time if you like warm temps. I have lived here all my life and only go there now for bandon dunes golf resort. There are times when it's spectacular but expect overcast and cool at a minimum with some possible afternoon sun. At worst expect 50 mph wind and torrential rain. The color should be amazing that time of year. Good luck

Ps. No sales tax so spend your heart out ! You also can't pump your own gas. Lol

While October weather in my neighboring state of Nevada can be spectacular in October, it can also be ugly at times. I would be more concerned with the traveling weather enroute than the local Oregon park climate.

We have had temps from 55-80 in October and lows around 45-50. Sometimes you will get hammered with rain and wind and sometimes nice and clear......hard to predict. And this is around Lincoln City and Newport.

It never downed on me that Idaho could get miserably in late Oct . I should be in decent weather from Moab to the southern part of NM.

What ever the weather may be, at South Beach State park near Newport. Bring rain gear if needed and take time to walk down the trail to see the Pacific or go near the south jetty and watch big waves. Do not go out into the jetty during a storm. See the fishing boats going thru the channel and be glad your not on one.

I know you can't pump your own gas in a car in OR, but what about diesel?

They usually pump the diesel too. It's really weird, but just sit back and enjoy.

You can if they let you. (Pump your diesel) Normally at the main brand stations NO, at the independent ones they might let you pump from start to stop or just the stop part. The signs say all engines must be off and some do not think that applies to diesel, it does. I even asked the OSP fire marshall to be sure.

Used to stop for gas in my home state of N.J. (mid 1960's) the attendant fueled your car, checked the air pressure, washed your windshield, checked under the hood (if you allowed him to), tried to sell you a new set of wiper blades, took your money, and brought you your change along with Triple-S stamps and another dinner plate or cup & saucer for the set of dinnerware you were building. Oh, BTW, regular gas sold for 25.9! A lot of jobs went by the wayside with the advent of self-service. Times have sure changed.

Regarding Oregon: Pumping your own gas: Oregonians driving non-commercial vehicles will be allowed to pump their own gas — so long as they're stopped at a service station in a rural area (counties with 40,000 people or fewer) between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Welcome to the 20th century, Oregonians. The 21st is just around the corner.

I should only have to full once in Oregon having 86 gallons of diesel but the Harley is another issue . I don't like using the gas from my Toy hauler tank it always looks nasty coming from the pump. I suppose that shouh be an new thread under toy haulers .

I used to be one of those attendants when I was a kid, but we handed out Green stamps. It was an entry job and not one to pursue as a career.

I worked for a great guy who did a lot of mechanical work for the local neighborhood clientele. Wayne was one of those go-to guys who folks depended on to do the right thing for them. If he couldn't fix it, there was no charge. Working in the maintenance bay was the graduate position, and Wayne paid more than the other guys. Good memories and a good work ethic learning experience for the high school auto shop kids working for Wayne.

All the stations here on the coast will not let you pump your own gas. And all of these are way under 40K in population. The will let you pump diesel and gas for motorcycles.

that's good information on fuel , Ill make sure and use rural ares to fuel the 50 gallon transfer tank. I have exploded diesel in the back of my truck if the nozzle isn't shoved in all the way LOL.

Weather-wise, I'd expect cloudy skies and cool temps, with rain and fog likely. It might be windy right on the beaches. It's not likely to just sock over and pour the entire time, but you will get wet.

The coast gets 65-95" of rain a year, more toward the north end, less toward the south end.

The best advice for gas is to pick times of day when it isn't busy and, if you are pumping diesel, smile and be nice and the attendant may well let you do it yourself. Since the coast is such a tourist area, even the counties in which one might be eligible to pump non-diesel gas during the evening hours likely won't allow it.

Oregon's current "strange" laws are no self serve gas, state-controlled hard liquor sales (wine and beer are available in grocery stores and convenience stores) and legal pot. If you like beer, bring a growler to fill at a microbrewery or growler fill location.
