Two warnings not addressed

These cost me $500 and $300 respectively.

First dumb move: backed into tight spot in FL. Kicked slider back and had tailgate closed. 5er went off edge of concrete pad and dropped 2 inches and screwed up the top of my tailgate. Ouch! Even more stupid is I have a lower gate for towing but neglected to change it out for the trip. Realized that when I stopped for fuel. 150 miles from home. Did not occur to me at the time to remove the quick release tailgate.

Second: did a full jackknife turn in closed position. For $300 I learned RV can hit the cab and it will if you are stupid. Fortunately not a mark on the RV. I was going like 1 mph!

Sooo, save yourself some money and aggravation by not doing what I did!

ouch indeed!... I have a longbed, so hopefully I won't experience 2 without craziness turn

And hence why the PullRite SuperGlide hitch is so dang popular... I'd never remember to slide the hitch manually every time.

When I decided to buy the auto super glide hitch I wondered if it was worth the money. GLAD I DID! Thanks for the info, now I know I didn't waste my money.

Wow! That is GREAT advice. It took me many attempts to get to that point, but I never put it into words. YOUR WORDS are perfect.

Congrats on your new purchase. The biggest problem I have had is at night backing in, the glare from the back up lights of the TV reflect off of the bottom front of the 5er. Makes it almost impossible to see beyond the first 5 feet of the 5er. I have toyed with the ideas of covers for the lights to floods on the 5er facing down to illuminate the rear of the unit, to using one of my upfitter swithes to turn off the white backup lights during the backing. Good luck and like everyone else has stated it gets easier with practice

I have not seen it mentioned on this thread, but one thing to remember, while towing your fiver forward, is that the trailer does not follow the truck and you must turn wide to avoid pulling the trailer into or on to something. I had some very close calls and was saved by DW's warning me. While I had been towing bumper hitch trailers for years I was new to fifth wheel towing.

Forgot that I was going to mention how much we like our Alpine. Been very lucky with not problems at this point. We are taking a trip to Texas soon and we really look forward to using the Alpine again. Good luck with your ventures!

One thing that helps is to lay a few flash lights on the ground along you backing path. It gives you some points of reference.

Also you can't see your spotter. Their job is to yell if you are about to hit something.
