hello from Oregon

My wife and I just purchased a 2021 keystone sprinter 341bik. I'm using my current 1989 F250 7.3 turbo to pull it.
Looking forward to finding out more from other owners.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new RV.

I would pose the same question as Chuck....1989 F250 (31 years old) pulling a 11,500gvw trailer almost 39' long??

1989 F250 did come with a 7.3L Diesel engine, but it wasn’t turbo’d.

I made pretty good money putting Banks Turbo kits on those old Fords.

My ‘94 had the factory turbo with the free “smashed” down pipe. First thing I did was contact ATS for the upgraded housing/outlet and down pipe.

My first oil burner was the f350, 88 with 6.9? non turbo, next the 96 with PS turbo 7.3. Boy what a difference. Even better after the aftermarket full size down pipe.

Yep I can almost smell it now, that 7.3 rattling/clattering loudly up an incline followed by a gigantic stinking black cloud of smoke & you can almost see a rv hooked up to it, you'd swear it must be burning.
Remember when you could sit in a campground & you could tell if it was a Dodge or a Ford diesel coming in the entrance by the rattling/clattering of the engine & still smell it a 1/2 hour after it passed by.
The good ole days of diesel pickups, thank goodness for the improvements. Nowadays if you don't see the badging it's hard to tell if it's a diesel.

Easy to ID a dodge, it belt “chirped” when you shut it off.

Boy, tough crowd today!
Just because the TV is 31 yeayold doesn’t mean it hasn’t been well cared for and updated and improvements made. Our 89 F250 460 had a GVWR of 8,300#. Iwoud say enjoy the tow.

Yeah, but because one was well cared for can't extrapolate to the millions that weren't - that would be a stretch.

The concern for me, having had a hobby that was rebuilding old vehicles, is the drivetrain/suspension/running gear and possibly the frame (depending on where it came from). I think I can safely say that on virtually any vehicle over 30 years old I have had to replace all the front end, suspension, u joints, etc. And that was just to make sure it didn't leave me high and dry someplace. Throwing a 11,500lb. trailer 39' long on the back of it REALLY makes those parts important.

I only question it because a 1989 F250 may have had a 7.3L Navistar (International) Diesel engine but wasn’t turbod from the factory. It is a very durable engine though. Ask me how I know.

When talking older tv's the descriptors "well cared for" or "pampered", or "babied" are often used but rarely defined. There's a huge difference between keeping the oil changed and the paint waxed and changing out worn or aged body and suspension bushings, changing out worn/fatigued suspension componenmts including spring packs, hangars, a arm bushings, etc. Then there's the inspection of the frame for rust, fatigue cracks, etc. Not saying that it doesn't exist but it's less common than the ones that visit "jiffy Lube" twice a year and the car wash twice a month.

Those 7.3s without a turbo are called International IDI and evolved from the 6.9 IDI. The 7.3 had mods to make it more emissions friendly I guess.

Yup IDI indirect injection. 94.5 started the power stroke DI- direct injection. I have the turbo IDI.
