winterizing holding tanks

Getting ready to do the winterizing. What does everyone do to or put into their tanks for the winter?

If you empty the holding tanks why would you put anything in them? If there are small amounts of residual flud, doubt the volume would be sufficient to harm a tank if the fluid freezes. I put anti-freeze into my pee traps so a bit extra would get into your tanks if that makes you more comfortable.

When winterizing, the first thing I do is drain all the tanks completely. Because I can do this at home, I usually leave the valves open for an hour or so before I do anything else.

Then when pumping the pink stuff through the faucets, toilet, and shower, the first flow of clear water followed by pink stuff will go into the holding tanks, and continue to drip out... granted diluted. But it doesn't matter, the tanks are empty already.

My fresh water tank, I drain it completely, until it quits draining. I do leave the valve open and take a small piece of cloth (anything will do) and wrap it around the drain held on with a rubber band, simply to keep anything, like bugs, from crawling up the pipe. It doesn't matter if there is a couple gallons of water left in the fresh water tank that never drains. There is now so much space empty in the tanks, any ice freezing has plenty of room for expansion.

If tanks are empty, there nothing else you need to do with them.

Empty the tanks, air doesn't freeze.

The concern with freezing in the winter is due to the expansion of the ice. That’s bad news in a water line, especially metal lines like on the faucet and also in the toilet where the lines connect, it’ll bust out the porcelain. Empty holding tanks with t get damaged, even if there is a little water left in them because there’s plenty of room for expansion.

I drain the tanks then pour a gallon of cheap vegetable oil in each tank. Was told this keeps the rubber on the drain gate valves from drying out.

There's a long, LONG history of threads discussing the use of EEVO to lube the seals on holding tanks. I suppose it was about 7 or 8 years ago the discussion of adding vinegar to the tank to supplement the EEVO started. Since then, every once in a while, the topic surfaces....

It's always good to have some Italian spice, now as for putting it in the holding tank, purely a personal preference LOL

It's always worked well at lubricating my internal plumbing.
