Hmmmm That just doesn't sound right..... 2" of "water" in the bottom of a battery box with a "new" 6 months ago battery that was too hot to touch...
I'm thinking the converter/charger isn't shutting off or the wiring somewhere is shorted causing the battery to consistently feed and charge....
It could be a "bad battery" but I'd sure do some checking before putting a new one in the box...
As for drilling holes in the bottom of the box, It might help with the "water" issue, but question should be, "Why is there 2" of liquid in my battery box?"
As for the refrigerator running on battery power while underway, I don't see why not if you have an inverter that you can plug into the 12VDC to power it, just be careful if you stop at an "attraction" and they kids get you sidetracked for several hours, could be an issue getting the TV started..... Also, expect less ability to recharge the trailer battery if you're using amps to power the reefer.
