Impressed By Tent Campers

Currently at an RV park in Hill City SD, a site just up the hill from us has a family camping in a couple tents. Looks to be a 3 generation outing. The Grandparents have to be in their mid to late 60s. Gotta give them a lot of credit for going out with the family and spending time with them grandkids. I know at 52, I can’t tent camp and sleep on the ground anymore. It’d probably take me half the day just to get my back straightened out and be able to function. Great to see this kind of commitment and family camping.

We have a similar campout with our kids and grandkids every year. They are in tents, we're in our 5er. Maybe not quite as committed but much more comfortable...

I remember tent camping with friends and our horses when I was living in Idaho. We used to take the horses and tents to a place in eastern Oregon called Austin Junction, will never forget this place on BLM land. It even had corrals and creeks flowing thru them. This was back in the early 90s.

My point, tent camping was so simple back then and I was so much younger. I do miss those times but treasure the memories. As stated though, at my age now I do love my 5er.

My kids are young enough(9 and 11) that they still like to tent camp...in our backyard. A couple times a year, we "rough it" with our 10 person tent with a porch, cots and air mattresses to sleep on, and fans for the ridiculous georgia summer nights. A single night of that usually makes them appreciate our TT for another 6 months or so.

They have come to agree that air conditioners have to be one of the greatest inventions ever.

I wouldn’t argue with them on that except when I used to tent camp on deer/elk hunting trips at 8k feet in WY in Nov. Temps often dropped to single digits. During those trips I’d argue a furnace was the best invention.

Agreed. I was stuck in Fort Peck (I trvaled there in Dec with a group of chiropractors to take Christmas gifts to the native Americans, especially kids) for 5 days due to a blizzard. Of course our hotel heater went out on day 1...the actual temp was -16 outside. No idea what the "real feel" temp was. It was cold, and I would've given my left....sock...for a heater.
