The last time I went through Baton Rouge, several years back, it was a backed up fiasco then. Told DW I would not go back there and I haven't. Strangely the other day I just happened to mention we ought to go back and see that neck of the woods again....maybe Baton Rouge was better. Well, I can see now I probably won't be back there before I'm pushing up daisies.

For a fella from the Houston area this perpetual fixing/fumbling along IH10 should make you feel right at home! The road surface of all of IH10 and IH20 through Louisiana is somewhat less than wonderful.

Oh yeah, it warms the cockles of my heart, whatever that is.
I-10 was originally Hwy 73 going east. I can remember when it was a divided 4 lane with a stop sign at 610 east, where the Budweiser brewery is. Want to find the scariest portion of I-10? Drive it through Orange Texas. Don't even think about visiting the rest area just west of Louisiana. You better have some horsepower to merge on the freeway as the entrance ramp is maybe 40 yards long.
I 45 , aka The Gulf Freeway, to Galveston has been in constant re-construction forever.
So George when the majority of Houston finally retires to "The Hill Country" you too will be inundated with construction. Add the California prune pickers moving here and the current mess with I-35 is only the beginning.
Oh the pains of being popular.

I live in a rural area and avoid SATX whenever possible. i seldom drive on an interstate. The main highway through Medina County is US90 that goes through our county seat Hondo then on through a bunch of small towns, Uvalde then Del Rio and on towards El Paso. Nothing much between Del Rio and Alpine so make sure you have a full tank of fuel especially on a motorcycle. San Antonio is a bit better than Houston as far as getting around with lots of ways in and out; IH10, IH37, IH35, US90, etc. SATX has an inner and out loop road but they are generally a nightmare as that is how folks get to work or whatever.

Yeah I used to drive through SA every other Sunday on my way to Laredo. Nice easy driving after stopping in Luling for lunch. Nice country, takes a while to appreciate it.

Getting around San Antonio is way easier than Houston, Dallas, or even Austin. We have 2 million people here, but traffic does flow. You used to be about anywhere in San Antonio in about 20 minutes, but nowadays it takes about 30 minutes. I'll take that any day versus sitting in traffic for hours!
