Dodge Cummins mpg

Greetings,

I'm looking to purchase a stock 06 2500 Dodge Cummins diesel 5.9L and was wondering if anyone has any MPG info to compare. I'm pulling a travel trailer 08 Springdale 296BHSSR which is about 6,900 lbs empty. Please let me know about any aftermarket chip modifications that helped MPG

I have a 2003 dodge cummins diesel 5.9L. When we had our 2008 tango 276rbs Which was 5400lbs empty I would get 12 mpg without chip. With chip I ended up getting another 1 mpg on average better. I haven't seen huge value in the chip. Now I have a 5th wheel toy hauler nearly 10,000lbs and I am getting 11mpg on same trips and distance. The weight does make you drive a little slower but not a huge difference...

Hope that helped..

My 04.5 is a 2WD long bed Quad cab. I average between 18 and 23 solo. I make the same trip every year towing 2500 mile round trip to Fl and back to Jersey. Last years trip was 14.8 southbound and 16.8 return trip. I attribute the difference to two factors ..... #1 I am not in a hurry to get back to work on the return trip. .... #2 I go south the end of March (still selling a winter blend of fuel) and come home the end of April. (back to summer blend)
My truck is stock and I think the 06 and the 04.5 high out-put 5.9 are very similar if not the same. IMHO you will not find a truck with better mpg towing than the 5.9 HO engine. My 94 got 26 highway but dropped to 12.5 to 14 towing. Sorry for being long-winded, Hank

....http://www.turbodieselregister.com/ .... Is a great site to get all the info you need on Ram-Cummins trucks.

I have an '06 Dodge 3500 and get 24 mpg without pulling and 14 to 16 pulling a 2009 Copper Canyon 355 fwbhs. It weighs about 14,000 lbs. I put on parts from Banks and no chip yet - all bolt on parts.

thanks all for answering. even though with the higher price of diesel it still beats 6-7 mpg i'm currently getting on my 07 chevy tahoe. best thing is already have the wife convinced on a diesel. cant wait to be able to travel out of FL with a good and economical tow vehicle

Good luck with the decision. This is the first diesel I have owned now going on 7 years. Just doesn't drive a diesel truck like you stole it and they perform well. Fuel economy will definitely be better than your tahoe. My wife rarely drives the truck and never complains... Her vehicles Always comes back empty so I am forever filling fuel tanks..

I must have a heavy foot the fuel economy numbers kicked around seem a bit generous from other folks. Then again, I am talking Canadian UK gallon VS USA gallon. Imperial UK galling is 4.5 litters VS. USA gallon being 3.78 Litres. So maybe it's better for me in that aspect..
