Tundra 2000-2006 owners... need help

Worried about my setup, but could use some other Keystone + Tundra owners to put my mind at ease...

My setup: A Springdale (Keystone) 268 BHL (27') with a slide.... ~5400 dry / ~7600 (fully loaded - pic below) with my 2003 Toyota Tundra Limited 4x4 with slightly oversized BFG's and a leveling kit in the front. I have factory hitch with EZ Lift WD system and a sway bar. Am I safe?

Tundra door says ~6800. Toyota says can tow a 7100lb trailer. In the manual (it's like greek with all the engine numbers), I see numbers from 7400-10000 lbs.

I've read on some boards that with a WD system (which I will always use), I can go up to 1000 (tongue)/10,000 overall. I also have the factory installed tranny cooler, and will use a brake controller.

Am I risking too much? Or ok? I'll try not to max out the weight by filling it, so will tow it as close to dry as possible.

Anyone else towing this trailer with a Tundra?

Where will my weak-link surface if I'm too heavy? Hitch or Engine or ???

Appreciate any help.

Unless you are by yourself, towing an RV "as close to dry as possible" is a difficult thing to achieve. In addition to camping gear and accessories, there are clothing, food, dishes, etc., that are pretty essential if you are going camping.

The problem of trying to keep your weight to an absolute minimum is made even more difficult if you have children. Depending upon their ages, parents usually haul quite a load of toys and other things to keep the kids busy and occupied.

Campers take varying amounts of stuff with them - some more than others but I think you will be surprised how quickly all that "stuff" adds up. Everyone has to take a certain amount of gear and other basic supplies to help make camping enjoyable.

It admirable to try to keep your weight to a minimum and good luck with your new unit.

I don't own a Tundra but it really doesn't matter. It is all about the numbers supplied by the maker of the vehicle. You're going to need to get a better grasp on some of the numbers to know for certain.

What is the payload rating of the truck? (should be on the yellow sticker on the door jamb)

Which engine is in the truck?

What is the rear gear ratio?

What are the numbers on the receiver on the truck? (very important for tongue weight calculations)

The weak link in most 1/2 ton pick ups is the payload rating vs. the tongue weight which should typically be about 13% of loaded weight.

BTW, most people add at least 1000 lbs to the dry weight of a camper and most add about 1500 lbs or more in my experience.
