What TrailAir airspring for 327RES Cougar?

Anyone with a Cougar 327RES use a TrailAir air ride pin box (Lippert 1621 frame = TrailAir model L05)? If so what airspring model did you determin you needed based on loaded pin weight? And do you wish after the fact that you went with a different airspring?

Unloaded the mfg spec's the 327RES dry pin weight at 1545 lbs. Now add propane, battery and stuff, sometimes tanks full sometimes not?

Did you buy the L05 224C spec'd 1801 lbs -2500 lbs?
or
Did you buy the L05 26c spec'd 2501 lbs - 3400 lbs?
or
Did you buy the L05 20c spec'd 3401 lbs - 5400 lbs?

Funny thing. I called etrailer today after seeing they have no place to specify the air spring and they said they havnt heard of using different airsprings. Said I just order based on a 1621 lippert frame? Am I reading this graph wrong? http://www.ultra-fab.com/images/prod...ichpinbox.pdf#

Seems to me I would need to specify?

Looks like you have it figured out. Ask to talk to another sales person.
I'd order it by part number and only accept that #. I wish the TrailAir box was stock height (raises the front of the 5'er almost 2")

Thanks for your response. I contacted Ultra-Fab today and asked. The response was that the TrailAir L05 for the Lippert 1621 only comes in the 1801 - 2500lb. range, so the L05 is the one and only, no further airspring info needed.

I think the their document needs to be clearer but with that said my order has now been placed. Looking forward to installing it and trying it out once the snow melts.

Just purchased a 327RES today. When I asked the service manager if we need an air ride pin box he said they are used mostly on heavier units.

Please excuse what my newbie 5er inquiry as I'm trying to transition from the TT world to 5th wheel. Are you purchasing one based on your towing experiences? We're having air bags installed Monday and I'm curious if this will also be needed...

Thanks...

Scratch...I'd say it's a borderline call for needing air hitch with your truck and a 10,000lb (11k GVW) fifthwheel. Try without it first and see if it bucks and kicks around. I tow a 8500lb 5th wheel with a truck like yours without any issues at all, very smooth. (your truck is a tad heaver than mine too)

I use the 5th Airborne Sidewinder on my 13 29RES. It is wonderful. Very smooth and pulls great.

Great advice, "try it out without it first". See how your combination works together. Adding an air ride pin box is like adding another level of suspension to lessen the stress between the truck and trailer improving upon your ride comfort and lessening the stress on the trailer frame and everything riding on it. Trying to keep this short I'm driving a diesel 1 ton crew cab long bed, ideal for pulling most things out there, I added air bags to the trucks rear leaf packs because I also have an in bed 100 gallon aux. fuel tank so I put between 7 -15 PSI in the air bags when I fill that tank, or if i'm pulling with full waste tanks which are a bit axle forward on the 327RES to simply level out the truck a little. Now last year without a air ride pin box I put over 3000 miles on this set up going out west. Related to the stresses I spoke of earlier here is the list of warantee work that was done to the 5vr and what you should look out for on your 327RES.

1) Factory pin box had slipped upward in it's mounting holes. Have the dealer check the torque on the pin box bolts when you pick it up, thers enough slop in the holes that you can loose about an inch of height between the 5vr and your bed rails if it slips down.

2) In the bedroom closet we found two rips/breaks in the woodwork, one in the left side of the dresser and one in the front wall, both were aprox 6" long. Dealership peeled the lower nose off of the exterior of the 5vr and said they found one bolt missing in the curb side frame where the upper and lower frames meet, and couple of other bolts in that frame area were loose which they expained was alowing "more flex in that area than usual". They welded in an additional 8" of steel frame on both sides and added a couple more bolts to add more structure in that area. Then obviousely put it all back together and fixed the interior components.

3) Rear bumper due to inadequit structure where the frame is welded to the bumber tube with the weight/leverage of the spare tire and its carrier tore away from the frame. There is a recall on this from Keystone so make sure that your dealer checks that yours is corrected or the modification is done before you leave with it. The mod is they weld a couple of gussets to add more structure.

4) Rear TV slide latch had snapped. Mine only had one in the center, later models like yours they've put 2 latches on this and the latch quality has been improved. They have repaired mine by putting on the 2 latch system.

5) Rear; radio that's under the TV, the outside speaker LED doesnt stay on, loose internal connection of some type. They've replaced my radio.

That's it. These things happen and we still love our 5vr however all can be debated if it was workmanship or road stress. I think taking the long trip was a sort of accelerated aging test of sorts and truely believe adding an air ride pin will lessen the stress on the 5vr frame and components along with improving ride quality.

Sorry this was long but hopefully it will be helpfull.

Yep, Scratch, that's the down-side of going from TT to FW... gotta buy more *stuff*!

All kidding aside - I agree with the others - wait (take several trips first) and then decide.
You may find it isn't necessary -or- at least right away.

Granted, there have been a couple of times while traveling cross country (on certain sections of Interstate )
having an air hitch would have been really nice, but... over-all with our Laredo we haven't *needed* it.
