Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer Towing Tips

Put up a tips post on my blog sharing some of the things I've learned from total newbie to 35,000 miles of towing experience under my belt. Thought it timely for any new RVers joining the ranks of fifth wheel owners.

Really good advice.

I have seen an ad for a driving school where people go to learn how to drive large motorhomes and 5ers in the Denver area. Maybe you could do something like that, but do it on a traveling basis. You could hold seminars where ever you go. Hold driving school, plus instruct newbies on what to look for in buying a new or used camper, along with basics in maintaining them.

Thanks, good ideas. Too bad I'm a Canuck and not able to work in the US.

great job. i would only add,
1. in cornering the the back end of the 5th wheel will swing wider then the tv. ( Why to campgrounds put road signs so close to the path)
2. when backing up- forget the hand signs- get 2 way radios or use you cell phone on speaker.

Thanks, good tips. I added them into my article.

We tried the 2 way radios but my old clattering diesel is too loud and my wife has poor hearing so went back to the hand signals. I have see many other couples utilizing them though.

Your welcome Hank, one thing about RVing it's a constant state of learning. Guess that's what makes it so fun.

Hello raytronx! I would like to thank you for sharing your good blog. I got a lot of information about hauling and towing. I just want to add another tips to your hitching tips.

- Check the label to make sure your trailer does not exceed the maximum recommended weight tongue and towing capacity. Check for cracks and rust, with no connection problems. The hook is 10% of the total load when towing trailer is loaded properly.

My wife is my spotter and we usually use a 2 way radio or cell phone.

She is allowed to use only 3 words driver side, passenger side & stop.
