Almost certainly screwing around on the phone, applying makeup, looking down at the floor, etc.

I doubt anyone will find out the why, could be just about anything, but the results sure are frightening. Have to wonder if the driver was fully conscious as the vehichle looked to traveling fast and was continuing to accelerate after the initial contact. That had to hurt.

Difficult to be certian but it looks to me the person towing probably couldn't see behind the trailer. From what I could see it didn't look like towing mirrors and the trailer was wide.

I think I just watched that video a dozen times in a row. Wow! Unbelievable! Surly the driver of that mini van had to be distracted, like texting on their phone or reading the daily new paper or something! Just Wow! Unbelievable.
3 years ago we got T-boned when we were on the main road and the side street, both directions had stop signs. The driver plowed into us, hit the rear drivers side door square on. If we would have only been 5 seconds faster or slower, he would have simply run the stop sign and no one would have been the wiser. And oh ... by the way ... he was looking for the funeral home in town. Damage to our car was over $10,000. Yes, really. His insurance paid everything. Car was in the shop for over 3 months. We kept the van (car) for about 2 more months and although it was an absolutely flawless repair, my wife was never comfortable riding in that vehicle again. We traded and purchased our Chevy Colorado 4 door pick-up truck. She had to get away from the mini van after that.

I think your right. Honestly I don't know if you would even have time to react, if you could see this happening. My furrion would allow it, as I have it on while towing, but there is a slight timing lag to it.
Just one of those things that by the time you probably see it, it is already too late.

Looks like a Jeep or Toyota? Lots of cars now have "lane assist" which idiots use as self driving. Not even sure that vehicle had one but is a possibility while the "operator" texted on the phone. Just a story I made up to fit the results but could be....

Yup, if seen it likely would only be enough time to say S*** and then do it. When I was in my early 20's I was setting at a red light and out of habit, looked in the rearview mirror. A guy was barreling down behind me and knew he wouldn't be able to stop if he tried. I pulled to the right and he narrowly missed me anmd totaled the car that was in front of me. I was driving a light small car and I'm confident he would have killed me had I stayed there. Man was glad my father taught me not to stop too close to the car in front of you and to keep one eye in the mirror.

Once again someone didn't check the yellow stick and overloaded the tow vehicle. Obviously, he needed more truck.

Wow, I know gas prices are bad, but trying to catch a lift while going down the highway is a bit extreme.

Holy crap I feel sorry for the truck’s driver. There was nothing he could do, and probably time for no more than an “oh $h!t” when they felt the thump of the idiot hitting them. This is one of those that I would not believe could happen except for having seen it on the dashcam video.

Tell ya what. The silver suv in the center lane gets the situational awareness award for avoiding catastrophe. Probably had to change his/her underwear. The suv that plowed into the trailer never even hit the brakes. Crazy.

I pull a 34' race trailer - you can't see s##t behind it with any kind of mirrors. And people like nothing better than to suck into that space for some reason. Nothing like pulling a trailer to get a real idea of how many people should be riding the bus and not driving a car.
Like the jack leg that pulled out on to the highway in front of me Friday with his bitty truck and lawn trailer into the lane in front of me, rather than the empty left lane. I got my 21500 lbs down with hard braking to avoid but I nearly smacked that idiot off the highway. However, the "test" confirmed that the onboard trailer control is set correctly as it slowed as a unit and didn't try to jack sideways.

Got my first motorcycle in 1967. Sold my last motorcycle in 2007.
Way, way too many drivers like this on the road.

That's why the trailer brakes should a be a little more aggressive than the tow vehicle's (and manual override if you have the wherewithal). Scary stuff for sure.
