I 40 stoppage

I 40 between Asheville NC and the Tennessee state line is shutdown for construction. Westbound seemed worse but eastbound has issues too. We sat for 45 minutes westbound just creeping.
Campground owner in Kodak TN told me they are building a tunnel for wildlife to cross the freeway. Hmmmm....

Lovely, another example of our tax dollars “hard” at work! A number of years ago in VT the state spent $350,000 in a rural town to build a special tunnel for salamanders to get from one side of the road to the other. Salamanders! $350,000 on a rural secondary road! Imagine what it costs to do that on a major highway?

Up around Durango I believe they have those. When they were building them the road between Pagosa and Durango was a mess.

Tax dollars hard at work? Back when we were told of "shovel ready" jobs one of them was in a little town called Hope, NM. Nothing there but a curve and an old unused school. What did our tax dollars do? We built about a mile of sidewalks on both sides of the highway with ADA ramps, new driveways for the empty buildings etc. It was (and still is) unbelievable.

Plus, the highway-breed salamanders can get pret-ty bulky.

They have built a decent amount of the funnels and tunnels in MT along the interstate and some highways. Between Arlee and Evaro on Hwy 93 there is also a bridge built for wildlife to use to get over the highway. I thought it was a ridiculous reason to spend money, but honestly it has saved on animal (bear, elk, moose, etc) and vehicle collisions in the area. And, after my dad hit 2 mule deer one night as we were going out to elk hunt (they decided to run across the interstate together), I’ve kind of decided I like the funnels and tunnels too. I do not ever want to see a big muley (or elk or moose!) come at the windshield again. Scared the ever-lovin’ crap out of me since I thought she was coming through the windshield, luckily she bounced off and just cracked it.

I don't mind spending "some" money for wildlife, but this is a major project. About every piece of heavy equipment was seen. Looked like they were removing half the mountain.
At least 2 car wrecks associated with the miles long traffic jam.

I think as we continue to grow the population and spread out we have to come up with ways to coexist with all the animals. I'm not a bleeding heart by any stretch of the imagination but in my lifetime I've seen how destructive the human race is just by expanding and absorbing "space" and displacing everything that was/was supposed to be, in it. I would rather use my tax dollars for something like that than give it away to people that absolutely don't deserve it.

Thank-you for the heads-up about I-40 between Knoxville, TN and Ashville, NC.

We are currently at a campground near Charlotte, NC and will be returning to Indiana on the 24th of this month. We have 2 routes we could take to get home to Indiana.

Our preferred route is I-40 to Knoxville and then I-75 up to Cincinnati, OH. Then I-74 toward Indianapolis.

The other route is straight up from Charlotte I-77 all the way to Eastern, WV and take US-35 all the way to Dayton, head north and hit I-70 toward Indianapolis.

I guess we'll take the I-77 route heading home, especially since it seems Westbound I-40 is having more issues than Eastbound..

We took the West Virginia route coming to Charlotte, but wanted to take the Kentucky-Tennessee route returning home. So THANK-YOU for posting this.
