Snow load
A friend of mine has a mountain cabin where he keeps his trailer. With this years heavy winter in CA, he decided it best to pay for covered storage at an old lumber yard for fear of snow or tree fall damage.
The storage lot had a whole section of roof collapse from snow load/rainfall, totalling many trailers, his being one of them.

Darn!!! Ca is currently having its second heaviest snowfall record since recorded time. 791” so far.
Some ski resorts are talking about being open until August.

A lot of folks have been complaining about the deficit in precipitation the last few years. You know the saying "careful what you ask for!"

This winter it's a bit tough to swallow the global warming propaganda.
Here in Southern Arizona it's been one of the coldest wettest on record, nearing records for both.

My son lives in Telluride Colorado. He teaches climbing, is on a rescue team and makes extra money in winter shoveling roofs. When he first told me that I was surprised people would pay for it and he sent me some pictures and snow load is a real issue there. You also notice most structures roofs are very steep to help try to shed the load. When I was roofing in my younger days we always hated anything that was over a 6 pitch and a builder we did a lot of work for liked 8's.

how does that work with insurance? do you have to file a claim with your insurance or the storage owners?

From what I have seen, storage lots will have disclaimers that deny any liability on their part for what happens to items that are stored at the lot. Doesn't mean that legal action can't be taken or the disclaimers have legal merit but I doubt a storage unit carries sufficient insurance for this type damage. Recently had a person local who had a park model RV stolen from a storage lot and could not hold the owner of the lot responsible as these disclaimers were posted or they had signed a waiver (not sure which).

At our storage place, we are required to maintain insurance on our camper in order to store it there. They make it clear that their insurance doesn’t cover “tenants”. This saved me a couple of years ago when my unit was hit and run and sustained nearly $4,000 in damages.
As a side note, I have been in property insurance for a major carrier for 20 years and have seen many liability claims presented and almost none paid. Occasionally you may get lucky and a property owner will step up and help but it is rare.

You have set Brian off and should take into consideration that this now makes you his enabler.

Ouch. I feel sorry for your friend. Not fun to deal with. I’ve seen photos of a Paradigm that was stored at the same facility. It was in slightly “better” shape, but not much. Better being subjective because it was demolished, just not as flat as this one yet. Those photos showed the roof of the building still on the Paradigm and other campers. Looking at those photos, I was amazed at how many of the beams weren’t twisted badly, they just looked like the bolts used at connections had sheared off.
