Jackknife Couch Removal

Hello! We have had our 2003/2004 Springdale 229FDLS for almost 2 years now and have yet to figure out how to replace or remove the jack knife couch so that we can put in recliners or even a loveseat that reclines.

The couch appears to be built on a platform. When I had someone come out to address minor issue with slide and routine maintenance, he removed the board that covers the front of the sofa and underneath he had access to all sorts of mechanical things, so I'm guessing whatever we replace with has to sit on this somewhat narrow platform?

Ideas so appreciated....love to sort this out because otherwise she is perfect size!

Mine came out in a few manageable pieces and the base was secured to the floor with about four screws. The back unbolted from the hinges and the pull out was also hinged. I put cardboard on my floor to protect it and removed screws and bolts. The mechanisms are pretty simple, I also found some loose hardware.

Jackknife couch example

Our couch is not made like the new ones...the platform cannot be all the way removed because it is what provides access to the mechanics underneath, i.e. when he needed to adjust the slide. This is a picture someone else took after removing theirs...because of the narrow space and height, hard to know what it can be replaced with.

There are several brands of jacknife sofas that fit slides built like yours. They come in different lengths to fit the slide length, some as short as 60" and some as long as 74" or even longer.

Here are a couple of links that will get you started on your hunt for a replacement:

An alternative, if you're handy at carpentry, is to install a booth dinette in that space and then remove your current booth and put a conventional sofa or a recliner or two where the dinette currently sits (assuming the floor under it is flat, without the same obstruction as under your jacknife sofa)......

Here is a link to a couple of benches that would fit facing each other and use that "base in your slide" as part of their foundation. Then it's just a matter of installing a table between them.

All great ideas....we really don't want another jackknife couch...we would like recliners or loveseat recliner. We cannot remove our dinette because one side of it is part of our outside storage unit. She is only a 22' unit so not alot of space in there. The dinette section is fairly narrow. Thank you for all your time!

Check out this video:

While their slide isn't exactly like your slide, both are similar in having a "box that makes the slide too narrow for a recliner to fit without tipping forward.

Their solution may be adaptable to your slide and a "plus" for you is that your "box in the slide" is low enough that if you do install recliners, they will already have the clearance for the back to recline without having to pull them away from the wall....

Might work, see what you think.
