GVRW for Pickup Question

I selected 12,000 lbs for my RAM 3500 registration and with the trailer connected we are at 11,180 lbs on the truck. Combined gross for the truck and trailer is 18,160.

What I would like clarification on is my 12,000 lb registration correct for the truck?

If you're registration dept. is like mine there's no telling what they will put on there. When I bought my 3500 it was registered, paperwork sent to me and I was good to go. Come time to re-register it I just happened to look at it and it showed the gvwr as 8800lbs.! I asked the tax assessor person what the deal was and she said they just showed it low on new truck purchases to keep the registration fees down. I told her I wanted it to reflect the gvwr on my door sticker and she changed it....and doubled my fees (right at it). The correct number should be on the door pillar inside the driver door.

When we lived in FL, they taxed in increments as to the use of the F350, we were in NC for a few years and they would only tax at max capacity. Here in Kansas, they also tax as per usage. My question is since I selected the 12,000 that was offered and the truck with the trailer connected is coming in at 11,180 am I legal?

Max on this truck is something around 33,000 lbs

The max GVWR on your Ram is 14,000#, the max towing capacity is likely the 33,000# you mentioned.

If the gvwr of your truck is 14k you would be legal. I didn't know how your registration works. The 11,180 is the number you're looking for if taxed by usage. The 12k with a 14k max gvwr would be well within that window.

What is the GVWR on your truck from the manufacturer’s door jamb sticker? In this example it is 11,500 lbs.

The GVWR of a Ram 3500 DRW diesel is 14,000#, depending on cost for the extra 2,000# he can claim, might not be worth it as he has over 800# before getting to 12,000#.

Russ: My state recognizes this, but do all states acknowledge the registration weight based on use? When I mentioned the Carolinas earlier, I mistakenly posted NC, we were actually in Charleston, SC and they would only go by the assigned weight, I think the same goes for NY as the shipping company that I used to work for was always angry that there 3/4 ton pickups were getting hammered on registration charges and tolls.
We are planning on a trip to the Northeast in a few months and don't want to get nabbed by the Rhode Island State gestapo, there are few states that just get out of hand over there with their trucking enforcement, it isn't about safety, it's all about revenue...

I have a 2010 ram 4dr dually cummins. when i bought it used the notary in pa assigned my registration at 12,000 lbs the gvw at an annual registration fee of $373 dollars and a class 5 weight rating bringing my tolls for turnpike and bridges through the roof, forget about adding a 37ft trailer combo.I had the state reclassify it to a rate between 7000 and 9000 lbs which made a big difference .I told them my vehicle will never reach the 12000 pound gvw especially since most of the time it will be unladen.

We were in FL for a couple of years as well in the mid 90s and they did the 7000 - 9000 thing as well for our F350 Dually with no questions asked. Was just told don't go over or you will be fined.

The clerk at DMV this past year asked if I use my truck for business, I said no. She dropped the weight from 10k to 8k. That changed the month the truck would be up for renewal and dropped the cost. I asked why then was it so high and she said the dealers do that at purchase/registration. I asked (kiddingly) can I get a refund for the previous years? She smiled and said No. I had to ask!

My small town dealer registered my Ram dually for 10,000 Gvw. He said…it weighs about 8000 and it’s a 1 ton so 10,000. I went back to the showroom after I discovered this and made a fool out of myself. I told them that would be OK if I was Bubba Leeroy Jr and just pulled a load of cows to the auction barn a few times but heck I might be in New Jersey and be in a wreck hauling that 18,000 Gvw fifth wheel. Uh uh OK. I went to my county clerk and upped it to 14,000. Paid $1 for the change. Then called the county clerks office where the dealer is and ratted them out. The clerk said she is going to have a conversation with the dealer. Of course my registration tags cost $140 now instead of $70.
