Brakeaway Switch Cable
If the brakeaway switch cable accidentally gets pulled when the camper is parked, is it as simple as plugging it back in and everything is OK or is there more to it than that?

It should be that simple. Your battery is probably dead depending on how long the pin has been pulled.

Boy what timing
So you want to know what happens to break away switch when accidentally pulled??
Getting ready to leave for three week trip on Monday, Fuel up and position TV to hitch up, open tail gate. Interesting safety switch cable and pull pin sitting in bed of truck, cable pinched under hitch legs. Old man 's brain kicks in OOps that is supposed to be hanging from the Raptor king pin Unhitched a good many days ago
After getting cable loose pinched pretty good, figured better put pin back into switch cutting power to the breaks, was hard to get in and as I was looking at the break away switch box, was thinking Boy that is a weird looking (shaped) housing. about third of housing was melted near where wires entered. Touched one of the wires and it just crumbled. First thing was OH CRAP my brakes
Pulling the Pin with just battery power is one thing, pulling it accidentally with a 100 A converter looking over the battery is another
So far it seems like the break away switch acted like a melt away fuse. Replaced the melted switch and tested by pulling pin, heard click on all four wheels and noticed big load put on battery. Have yet to test brakes any further such as moving Raptor and stopping it with brake controller or getting wheels off ground one at a time spinning them and activating brake to stop them. Since truck is now hitched will probably check by moving Raptor with the TV, Have to move out of storage area anyway and get packed up.
So that is only one of the no good things that can happen when break away pin pulled accidentally. I remember I was in a hurry when I unhitched (hurry up not good), Usually after unhitching I install the hitch pin tripod and tuck the cables into the pin box. I bet I will check that break away cable next time. Hopefully I will be good to hit the road. Movement test coming soon when rain stops.

Update: did a test of Raptor brakes during movement seems to be fine, so looks like brakes not fried just melted Break Away Switch which was replaced. I will attach a picture of the melted switch when I find where I put my phone
So it looks like its all go and wheels up tomorrow morning for almost a month long trip. I know top priority "Break Away Switch Cable"

You got lucky PARAPTOR.
For those of you towing a 5er with items in the bed of your truck just know that those items can also rip out that cable, Yep I did it. trust me you will NOW.

I was backing into a spot and managed to pull the safety switch. Took me a little while to figure out why the trailer suddenly would not move. Mine works very well.

When I get to the campsite I will take some pictures of the melted breakaway switch and where that cable got hung up. Bed of truck was empty it got hung up in the little crack where the hitch legs are pinned to the truck bed brackets, Never thought anything could fit between them Oh Well ??? Thanks !! Yeap we plan on having a good time Once again we will be at the mercy of the site WIFI

A few months ago I pulled a pin to test the brakes before an axle service. Good thing I did, it melted within 10 seconds and brakes didn't lock up at all. Ended up being a short inside one axle as I remember.

Thanks for the info, guys. My breakaway cable was only removed for about a minute or two. That's quite a story you shared with the forum, PARAPTOR. Glad that things are OK now.

......and if you have disc brakes, you should hear the hydraulic actuator running.
These switches are cheap and why I keep a spare just in case

Okay we are here, brakes seem to work so I think we are good. Attached are two pictures of the melted break away switch. reshaped a bit one wire totally burnt off. the last picture is of the hitch leg where the cable was caught, from where I was standing could not push the cable under there. cable was crimped pretty good, think what happened was the hitch had rocked just enough to open the spacing for the cable to get under there then the leg came back down on it. Just remembered to get the cable loose I had to get up in the bed of the truck to rock the hitch then get the stuck cable out .
