Weight Distributing/Sway control

Looking for Advice on my new Combo. 2016 F350 SRW 11500GVW package. with factory trailer brake control. 2017Cougar 29RKSWE with a listed hitch weight of 820 lbs. and GVW of 8800. I have a weight dist hitch with 750 Lb spring bars and no sway control. Truck has built in RSC sway control, Will this be enough or should I upgrade to a heavier hitch with sway control? Any one have expirence with the truck stability control? I just don't want the tail to wag the dog, and have a safe setup.

You need a better WDH/sway control.

You need 1200 lb. spring bars. 1000 might do but will probably be overloaded; 8800 gvw. x .15% for tongue weight = 1320 lbs. The dry tongue weight on my trailer is 825. Actual weight on the tongue is over 1200 lbs.

The above would be for weight distribution. You also need sway control on that large of a trailer. The built in sway control on the truck (mine has it as well) is something that happens automatically but I couldn't say that it does anything noticeable in controlling trailer sway in my experience. My truck will pull my trailer (92-9400 loaded) fine without sway control but there is a world of difference in the way the truck/trailer behaves without the sway control (HD 2500 4x4). Do yourself a favor and get a good hitch/sway control. I use the Equalizer 4 point and I'm very happy with it.

I have a 2016 F350 CC LB with 6.7L Powerstroke, our trailer is a 2017 Cougar 28RBSWE. We use a Equalizer 4-pt 1,400lbs bars/14,000lbs rating, overkill for this trailer yes, but with 2,500 miles of towing this setup we have have zero sway issues. Sway control that is built in the truck computer is for when the trailer has already begun a sway situation which is a last resort for the truck to try and correct the issue before you really lose control. The WDH with sway control like the Equalizer, work to stop sway before it begins in the first place by using opposing friction points on the hitch.

I believe the ratings on the bars are for a combined rating, i.e. 750# x 2 is still 750# total weight rating.

Yes you want heavier bars. You will not be able to transfer enough weight to the front axle with the bars you have.

Take a look at the Blue-ox Sway-Pro. I have used this hitch on two different trailers. It's the simplest hitch on the planet to set up and works as advertised.

I towed a similar weight TT with a 2500 series truck with airbags to stiffen up the rear and honestly couldn't tell a difference with the WDH on or off (and yes it was setup properly). The tongue weight of that TT is approximately 1/4 of your payload so not even scratching the surface of what that truck is capable of. Anti-sway? That's a whole other ballgame. Of course you need something good just because of physics of pulling so low from one point off the bumper.

All the super high end hitches IMO are for guys maxing out their 1/2 ton trucks. An F350 alone with anti-sway would be a fine setup. Some WDH bars can't really hurt but I really don't think you need to break the bank.

I have a 2013 272RK Outback which I pull with a 2008 F150. I don't remember weights off the top of my head, but I use an EZ weight distribution hitch with sway control and 750# bars.

After a few years of this setup, I considered upgrading my bars to 1000# bars prior to the camping season. However, I was talking to a friend who last year moved to a Andersen 'No-Sway' Weight Distribution Hitch He also has an F150 with a similar size and weight camper that I have.

After doing some research, and talking to my friend, I am going to switch to the Andersen hitch. Its a little pricey, but according to my friend, keeps the camper rock steady.

Perhaps take a look at this hitch.

Are those 1000 lb. bars you're looking at? If I recall your tongue weight will probably be over that. Also, it says it's for a 2" receiver. I'm assuming the 350 has a 2 1/2" receiver so just make sure you have the sleeve. Probably came with the truck but ?? I don't know the height of your truck but my 2500 required a longer shank for my Equalizer. I assume Curt has that.

Looks like it ought to do the job. Operation looks very close to the Equalizer.

They do. I just picked up the Curt 17500 for my setup and needed to order a bigger drop shank so I can have a bit more air in my bags. Curt has a whole selection of different drop shanks.

Update, after 1300 + miles on the trailer now the Curt 17501 is a great set up, at least for me, I haven't had a chance to actually weigh the combo and get an accurate TW. The truck has approx 500# in the bed so that makes it like 9K loaded and the trailer is approx 8K loaded. Passing 18 wheelers are hardly felt and the trailer has minimal movement in the mirrors like less than a inch. The famous Turniagian arm winds and Knik river winds do not effect the trailer either. The combo pulls a 7% grade at 65MPH no problem. Just got back fro a big loop around Alaska and a little jaunt over to Whitehorse YT.
