Need a DRW for Carbon or Raptor?
My DW and I have been avid Truck Campers for several years. With our youngest son graduating from college in a couple months, we are wanting to begin the transition to a larger unit. We really like the Carbon/Raptor.
It looks like in most signatures that the TV for those are DRW. Is that the case? My current TV is a F350, SRW. MY TC could weigh up to 3480lbs based on tire and axle ratings, which seems to be less than the pin weight of either model.
Seems like I would need to upgrade to a DRW if we purchase either the Carbon/Raptor which we really like.

Guess this depends on which model you are looking at. I have a raptor 300mp and tow with a dually. I would think a newer one ton single wheel would handle it fine. I see tons of these being towed with 3/4 ton trucks however I am sure they are maxed.
Guess it depends on year and type of truck and particular model of th you are looking at

Carbon 327 in our shop now
Hello,
We have purchased the Carbon 327 and our TV is a 2010 F-250 6.4L Crew Cab with air bags in the rear to level out truck. Pin weight of 5er is 2820# and TV cargo capacity is rated at almost 3000# with a rear axle limit of 6100. GVWR for trailer is 16500 (11880 dry + 4620 cargo cap) TV rated to tow with a 5th wheel hitch is 15800. There is a large difference in maximum trailer weight rating between SRW and DRW and a lot of the difference is in the gearing of the TV.
With out knowing the year of your F-350 its difficult to say what your weight ratings should be. I have found the following link to gather the info on my truck.

I use a DRW to pull my Raptor because I desired the stability and the fact that no matter how much stuff we pack on a trip, I have enough truck for anything.

Thanks for the responses. My DW and I have decided to upgrade to a DRW. With our SRW we were going to be so close to capacity it just made sense to upgrade so we could look at all models and not be limited.
Again thanks for all the help. With this being so different from Truck Camping, I'm sure I will have plenty of questions as we get further along in this adventure.

WISE CHOICE I read one post pin weight 2800# cargo weight 3000# not much left for driver and crew and fuel and stuff. plus having 4 tires back there is a comfort if one goes boom! at least you will get it stopped safely.Enjoy

I have a 41' fusion Toy Hauler, the first advice I received from a experienced RV service tech before I bought a trailer and TV, was anything over 36' is better with a 1 ton dually. That's what I have ad I don't have a second thought when towing

I'm looking at the 327 as well. I was wondering which of the superglide hitches you went with? I have a 2005 Chevy HD2500 crew cab SB. I'm trying to do my homework to make sure I get the hitch that will allow me to clear my cab. Thanks in advance!

We chose the 18K Superglide hitch and installed airbags as well. We had the dealer install the bed rails and the frame kit at the same time. Seems to me like its a pretty rock solid set up. The day we picked up the trailer, we went to a big open parking lot to test the limits and practice backing and turning a bit. With the Superglide, I was able to get into a full 90 degree turn with about 2-3 inches to spare between truck and trailer.

Thanks for the info! I talked to a place that does hitch installations and they were thinking that I was going to need the 24k because it slides 18" not just the 14" that the 18k slides. The 24k is about $1,000 more than the 18k. I think I could put that extra grand to good use for some add-ons for the trailer. Oh, and I did install the firestone air bags to the rear and also bilstein 5100 shocks all the way around. Thanks again.

I have been on the fence about this as well. I want to upgrade to a 5th wheel toy hauler and I really didn't want to go DRW but like you guys are saying, it's better to have more truck than you need rather then push it to the limits on a SRW. I like the idea of a DRW due to the stability of things as the rigs I'm looking at weigh in over 18k and they can hold 3k-5k of gear and that almost tops out those dually rigs with the 24k 5th wheel package.

I may be a little late to the conversation, but here's my experiences.
I used to tow a '97 Jayco 323RKS with an "86 F250 SRW Longbed. The engine was far from stock and it had bags. I thought I was doing good, and when the opportunity arose to go DRW I decided it was a good idea.
In 2009 traveling @70 mph on I-40, I blew a rear truck tire. Pin weight was listed at about 2K. I was REAL happy I had 4 feet on the road and the other 3 held the weight fine so I could stop safely.
Current rig is listed at about 1200# pin, but I wouldn't tow a fiver without duals after that experience.

I agree with a dually. If you have ever pulled with a single rear wheel and then went to a dually you would never go back. But that's just my opinion.

Our Raptor, at 15.5K wet, is right at the rear axle limit of our F350 SRW. We have a dually on order and I'll be very interested to see how much of a difference it makes.

I did the same when we went to our current Raptor 4014. I also had an F350 LB SRW and couldn't tow the new trailer off the lot, the dealer wouldn't let me. Long story short, got it home and did tow it on our first trip with the new Raptor and knew right away I was going to be looking for a bigger truck. Ended up with an 06 F550 and it tows like a champ! These triple axle 5er toy haulers are not light, I recommend you hit the scales to get a true weight as the dry sticker weight tends to be a tad low.
Hit the scales empty, no toys, no water, no fuel, no food, no clothes, no wife kids or dogs and the scale read:
Steer: 5240lbs
Drive: 7820lbs
Trailer: 12680lbs
Total: 25740lbs

I put airbags on my F250 and it's pretty good but I still plan on getting a DRW in the future.

I'm pulling a Carbon 327 with a SRW 2500HD. I am a little close on the hitch weight but it doesn't sag much and my truck pulls the trailer just fine.

Bought a 371 Fuzion a few weeks ago and pulling it with my son in laws F-250. Truck pulls the trailer easily but I'm looking at a F-350 DRW to feel safer pulling it on long trips. Hitch weight 3,030 Empty wt. 13,140 Loaded wt. 16,410. Towing trailer as light as possible with the F-250.

I think I am going to put some airbags on it eventually.
I am still working and have a 7 year and 7 month old, so our camping is in state and 4 days at a clip. I would go DRW if I was going on more long hauls and cross country trips, but for the 98% of the time I am not connected to my 5th, I prefer the SRW on my truck.
