Am I just lucky or is this a real issue with most awnings?
In all our travels I've only witnessed 1 awning unfurl while being towed, but to be honest the entire rv was in a serious state of disrepair so I just assumed the awning was too.

You’re lucky. I was going from Reno to Bishop and didn’t heed the high wind warning. The awning didn’t complete unfurling and didn’t know I had a problem until I went to open the awning. It was a manual Carefree and the ribbon was hanging out the back. I had made 1” wide web straps with buckles for the arms. When I open part of the vinyl had blown off the fabric.
When I was driving semis, I was crossing Arizona and New Mexico on I-40 I saw 4 or 5 that were on the side of the road trying to repair it enough to travel or cutting them away for the same reason. Certain areas and time of year you can see the “dead” ones on the shoulder.
