Longevity of stuff ...

Howdy All;

Ever wonder how many times you can use any of several items in these RVs
we call HOME ? Well, this afternoon my water control valve for the commode
told me it quit. No warning, just up an quit. Well, actually it just allows a
trickle to run constantly.
Called a parts place for a replacement and guess what ... order will be
processed and shipped on Monday thanks to our Pilgrim ancestors. So,
I'll just be keeping the black tank's valve open and flushing with a 3 bowl
follow-up to hopefully get things out of the tank and out into the slinky
and into the hole in the ground.

For those interested, I've been living in this RV since May of 2011 and
gave the valve a job to do 3 to 4 times a day between solid and liquid
deposits and I'm on a diuretic. So, ... 5.5 years of daily usage single
person.

I'm interested in knowing what "spares" or repair parts people like to carry in their rigs.

I carry a set of wheel bearings, along with grease, brass punch, socket for the nut, an assortment of extra hardware for the spindles, and wheel seals. I also have an assortment of extra bulbs. There are parts for the water heater, which include an extra anode, electric element, 12 volt and 120 volt thermostats, along with the special wrench for the element and the socket for the anode. I have various parts for the faucets, which are mostly cartridges used instead of gaskets used on older faucets. I also carry an assortment of lubricants and caulking. Since I have a compressor on board, I also have a combination air nail/staple gun, which I have used a number of times putting cabinetry back together. I carry a lot of electrical connectors and some spare wire to make repairs on the 12 volt systems. All these things are supported by enough tools to make the repairs while on the road. There are other things, but these have made life much better while on the road, because we run with everything working, having repairs made right away. The wheel bearings and those parts and tools made what could have been a number of days trapped in Laredo, Texas into a couple hours of down time while I made repairs, and we then continued on to our intended destination that day slightly later than we expected.

I only carry fuses and an assortment of hand tools. If something serious breaks, then I'll guess I might rethink, but I worry more about the tow vehicle.

Same here. I have carried bearings in the past and may start doing that again, but up to this point I've never needed to use them (knock on wood). I do have some Teflon tape in my took kit, and I do carry a battery powered (Milwaukee M18) drill and impact wrench with 400 ft lbs of torque capability and a small assortment of impact sockets. And of course, everything I need to change a tire, which basically adds a torque wrench, 4 way, a short 2x6 and a bottle jack to my list of tools.

Like Chuckster I carry a small collection of hand tools and tire changing tools. along with the fuses I have 2 spare slide cables. After breaking 2 at different times on different slides in the mountains of Utah, I'll never leave home without them.

Well, the parts house outdid themselves. Got it out the door fast enough
that it made it here today instead of next week sometime.
So, ... my hat's off to PPL, where I purchased it from 4 stars in my book
for gettin' it done!

A few years ago the week before Christmas my water heater blew out. Called PPL and requested overnight and the guy said he wouldn't guarantee it because of the holidays so he charged standard shipping. It arrived the next afternoon 3 days before Christmas in a BLIZZARD!! From Texas to Southwest Michigan overnight at Christmas.

They have my business since.

PPL Motorhomes is a "Houston based RV dealership" that also has a "Parts Superstore". Their parts department is actually larger than most CW warehouses and they ship daily, much like Amazon.

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/ click on the "Parts Superstore" tab along the top. They used to have "free shipping" on orders larger than $100. Currently they have $9.99 shipping on all orders. So far they haven't gone the "Amazon Prime" (free shipping on all orders) but I'd suspect they have looked at the idea. So far, everything I've ordered from them has been "in stock for immediate shipping"... I don't know where they keep it all, but somehow they do.

Dyers RV http://www.dyersonline.com/ and Adventure RV http://www.adventurerv.net/ are two more "well stocked RV Parts Houses" with an online presence. I often check CW, PPL, Dyers and Adventure for pricing and order from the cheapest. What's "overpriced" in one is usually "on sale" or "discounted" at one of the others... It pays to 'comparison shop' for the best price. Good Luck !!!

Suppliers here have a captive market and they know it.
