See if you can change the TV order to DRW! The build likely has not started!!!

Nor do they love your family they way you do.

I hope it all works out. There are some screaming deals on leftover 2014 DRWs right now. Best of luck to you.
I did not tell him to go for it without worrying about it. If you are going to make a refrence be large enough to call it out properly and educated. If not you only cloud the waters. I stated I would do it, my choice, been where he is at and spent a lot of money in the process on mistakes. When you go to far to the right or left you cannot be taken seriously. Telling him 400 pds is life and death is a joke. Telling him to haul it with a F250 as the trucks are the same less the springs is a joke.

Have a DRW, I love it.

Let's just take a deep breath and try to keep this thread on track. Chris is probably more interested in helpful, constructive comments rather than reading about the disagreements members have with one another over what he should or should not do.

Its time for lets make a deal.

I am sure that the $500 is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars that the dealer will be out for losing the sale. Not to mention the commissions to the sales guy, etc.

When I got upset at my dealer before buying and wanted to pull out, he tossed $400 in Visa gift cards at me. Definitely lessened the annoyance.

If you are willing to shut down the deal, I would bet you lunch that your dealer is going to do whatever they can to keep from losing the sale.

Maybe make you a deal on a different model and let you not lose your deposit.

It never hurts to do some haggling, especially if you are willing to walk away from it.

Regards,
Steve.

Since we already owned the TV before we started looking, we fitted the trailer to the TV. Previous camper was a big Lance that weighs well over 3500 lbs. That weight was all on the truck with a three bike m/c trailer behind. We used it for 12 years with absolutely no trouble either with the truck or the law. My biggest concern when shopping for the fiver was being able to stop it. Exhaust brake on the truck and properly adjusted trailer brakes solved that problem. All the state of Arizona is concerned about is that we are under 26,000 lbs total. We are legal here so we are legal anywhere we go in the US. Don't spend time worrying about numbers if your TV can pull and stop your outfit without giving you white knuckles. Life is short enough without worrying about stuff you don't need to worry about.

Our experience with Pete's was great. In my experience with them, if you let them know your concerns, they most likely will work with you. good luck.

PetesRV has been stellar or, better said, the people have been just outstanding! They are patient, customer focused, and willing to answer any question. I recommend them without the slightest reservation. Just a great experience!!!

Chris,

I don't know which way you're going to end up doing nor do I know (right now) which way I would go, but, just as an after thought: the other day I weighed my combo on a scale and was surprised to find that my rear axle weight with trailer was about 450 pounds less than I expected. Later driving down the road, I remembered that I had about 45-50 gallons of water in the fresh water tank which is located in the back of the trailer. This infect, counterbalanced some of the tongue weight thus putting less weight on the rear axle. I don't always carry that much water back there, but in your case, maybe it could help????

Herap...thank you for that suggestion! I don't know where the tanks are just yet...but a great thought. I know rear weight doesn't counterbalsnce lb for lb but it can't hurt and certainly might help.

There is so much rear storage on this model that we will be stategically loading to the rear for sure. Also have been in touch with several owners of this same model to get their actual hitch weights on the Montana Owner's Forum...where, like us, they will not be adding a washer/dryer up front or a generator, etc. Pleasantly surprised to find out their scaled weights aren't as much above the spec hitch wgt. One was very very close.

Everyone has to do what they are comfortable with and what they think is right. Since we had decided to go with a fifth wheel early last year, I started watching trucks and fifth wheels going down the road and in campgrounds. I was amazed how many large fifth wheels are towed with single wheel trucks and even more amazed with 3/4 ton trucks. I know there are many people that think you shouldn't go "over" 1 pound of the trucks rating, but there sure are many many people towing with trucks that are overloaded by some degree. I am not in favor of towing overloaded into the several hundred to over a thousand category, but I would have zero problem (personally) towing that unit with your setup. I would add some firestone air bags, good rear tires aired up to the maximum, and enjoy life. If there were so many accidents caused by overloading and lawsuits because of overloading, we would hear of it ALL the time. I don't think that is the case. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your transparency. We bought a 2013 Ram 3500 SRW and the net payload is somewhat less than what we need for the 5th wheel we've been wanting to buy. We are now back to the drawing board, not wanting to go the DRW route. Still some nice options available, but not our 1st choice. We thought we'd bought 'enough' truck, but now see the wisdom in the advise to decide 1st on the RV, then buy the suitable truck. You helped clarify for us and to avoid the ditch of mismatching RV and TV.

Went with the Montana 3791RD. Love it. Hit the scales and the pin weight is just 20 or 40 lbs more than published. Am pleasantly surprised. This 5er has large rear storage....chairs tools coleman tables water supplies etc etc all fit behind the axles. Front basement is empty except for 20 lb propane tank for grill and the grill. We are not going with a washer and dryer and no generator so I think that helps keep the pin weight under control. With fuel, wife, pup and stuff...we are under max payload about 100 lb or so.

Was fortunate that we were able to get the G rated tire upgrade included.
