Awning pulled away from trailer

The metal strip that holds the awning fabric on the trailer pulled away on one end. I figure I would get larger screws and screw it back on. Underneath the metal strip was this black stuff. I thought it was dirt at first. Is it just sealer or is it glue?

The strip is called an awning rail. The "stuff" behind it is a sealer and comes in different forms and colors. If it's clean and intact, you can leave it. It's purpose is to keep moisture out of the interior. What I would do is reattach the rail and then run a bead of silicone across the entire length of the rail on the top side.

Awning rail pulled away

I called Camping World and they said under the awning rail is putty tape or butyl tape. In this case I just screw it back down, I don't have to apply anything, glue or sealer. Although I will add some sealer around the screws.
