scorched controls

Have a Passport with the pull out two burner gas cook top. Was " new to us" as it was a '08 and we purchased it in Apr. this year. Looked at he cook top and noticed two things. One was the fold up/down top that when in use the darn thing has no way of fixing the "wings" to hold the top up should a gust of wind come up. Two, the control knobs were scorched and now I know why..... the heat from the pot is directed down and with those controls so close to the burners it melts them. Can not imagine what might happen if the knobs melt and there was no way to immediately turn off the gas.... in that situation it take a cool head to find the propane turn off and use it! What kind of goofy designer thought this one up....??? Must have been on a Friday.
